Friends stab Chetla man to death after drunken brawl, OC shunted out | Kolkata News - The Times of India

Kolkata: A late-night drinking session turned fatal in Chetla on Saturday after Ashok Paswan (42) was allegedly stabbed in the neck with an iron rod by two of his friends following an argument over misappropriation of funds of a local Kali Puja, police said.The incident occurred around 11.30 pm near the 17B bus stand under Chetla PS. Within hours of the incident, Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma visited the spot, and soon after, the Chetla police officer-in-charge, Sukhendu Mukhopadhyay, was shunted, and Alipore PS additional OC Amitabha Sarkhel replaced him.Paswan was found bleeding profusely and was rushed by locals to SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.Police detained six persons from the locality for questioning and later arrested two -- Surajit Mondal alias Bapi and Tapas Pal. Both were produced before Alipore court on Sunday, which remanded them in police custody till Nov 8."We have enough evidence to arrest the duo. They were directly involved in the murder and also made the fatal blow. Police cracked the case in a very quick time," said Verma, confirming the arrests were made in less than 18 hours of the incident.Sourin Ghoshal, the public prosecutor at Alipore court, said police are on the lookout for three other FIR-named accused and are trying to check who played what role in the assault.Ashok's wife, Umadevi Paswan, who was visiting her parental home in Titagarh at the time, said she received a call informing her that her husband was attacked. "I don't know why they did this to him," she said. Police said Ashok worked at a local car service centre. He is survived by his mother, brother, and wife.The murder triggered fear and anger among residents of the area, which falls under the ward of Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim. Locals alleged that drinking sessions on the pavement near the bus stand are a regular occurrence and that repeated complaints to cops have gone unheeded.
