Cracker seizures double in 48 hrs, Kolkata Police to intensify raids | Kolkata News - The Times of India

Kolkata: Cracker violations have turned out to be a concern in various pockets of the city on Dhanteras (Saturday), barely two days ahead of Kali Puja and Diwali. These violations have been reported from Kasba, Dhakuria, Baguiati, New Town, Salt Lake, Phoolbagan and New Alipore. The seizures of illegal firecrackers had become more than double in the past 48 hours, police said on Saturday. The cops will intensify the crackdown on firecracker violators on the day of Diwali (Monday) by forming special teams to raid the city. "In case of use of banned crackers, we may not provide bail from police stations and produce violator in court," a senior police officer said. The Kolkata Police had seized 2,830 kg of illegal firecrackers till Thursday. On Saturday evening, the seizure amount increased to 4,600 kg. The number of FIRs lodged in these matters increased from 27 on Thursday to 43 on Saturday. More than 15 have been arrested for cracker related violations since Thursday. The recovery of 600 kg of illegal firecrackers from Esplanade Bus Stand had been one of the biggest seizures in the past 72 hours, sources said. In this case, 23-year-old Mohammed Zeeshan of Tiljala Road -- who was carrying three nylon sacks and 25 cartons filled with banned fireworks -- was arrested. "The accused intended to transport the contraband to Asansol. A case has been registered at Maidan Police Station under the Indian Explosives Act," said joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh kumar. Seizures were reported from Bansdroni, Burolla, Jorabagan and Patuli besides Behala, Sarsuna and Taratala markets. Cops resorted to miking and made repeated visits to highrises for creating awareness to curb noise pollution. Cops will hire 300 autos from Sunday for effective patrollingon Monday. A Dhakuria resident, Parama Roy, claimed that crackers were being burst since 9pm on Saturday in her neighbourhood. She claimed similar cases were reported by her friends in areas under Lake and Rabindra Sarobar police stations on Friday. TOI spotted shops selling banned crackers in Tollygunge, Behala, Janbazar, Park Circus, Keshtopur and New Alipore. Tech glitches linked to NEERI app and QR codes turned out to be a hurdle for cops. Cops would invoke IPC section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) to take legal action against SC ruling violators. Kolkata Police has decided to invoke an additional section under the firecracker component of the Kolkata Police Act, in case of violations.
