New Delhi: The crucial two-phased West Bengal Assembly elections will be held on April 23 and 29, and the results will be out on May 4. The battlefield is ready and political heat is building up. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will cross swords and fight a pitched battle on most of the seats. Several constituencies are emerging as key battlegrounds that could sway the balance of power in favour of either party. The first phase of the elections will cover 152 constituencies. In the second phase, as many as 142 seats will be covered. The fight is largely a direct battle between the TMC and the BJP for the CM's position. Let us take a look at 12 constituencies which are likely to witness the most intense contests. 1.Bhabanipur: The south Kolkata seat of Bhabanipur has been a bastion of TMC since 2011 when the party came to power. It hogged limelight in 2021 when the sitting TMC MLA vacated the seat to let Mamata Banerjee -- who had lost to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram -- to contest a bypoll and retain the chief ministership. Mamata returned to the Assembly by winning the Bhabanipur bypoll with 71.9 per cent of the votes. In the 2026 polls, the BJP has reportedly fielded Suvendu Adhikari against her here, even as he also contests from Nandigram. 2. Nandigram: It is in Purba Medinipur district. In 2021, BJP's two-time MLA Suvendu Adhikari bagged almost 49 per cent of votes. He defeated Mamata. The vote share of Adhikari, a potential CM face for BJP, was quite high. The TMC has fielded Pabitra Kar -- a former BJP member close to Adhikari once -- who joined Trinamool only hours ahead of announcement of his candidature. At a meeting on March 25, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said he had personally taken charge of the seat, and that Nandigram was his responsibility. 3. Diamond Harbour: This seat, located in South 24 Parganas, assumes significance for the TMC as it falls within the Lok Sabha constituency held by the party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Since 2014, Abhishek has represented the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, and won it three times in a row. In June 2021, he was appointed the party's general secretary. Winning this seat is a prestige issue for the ruling party. 4. Jadavpur: This seat was a CPI(M) stronghold from 1967 to 2006. In 2011, TMC shattered the monopoly of the Left. Since the, the seat has swung twice more. This time, a direct fight between TMC's Debabrata Majumdar and CPI(M)'s Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, a former mayor of Kolkata and a sitting Rajya Sabha MP, is on the cards. 5. Murshidabad: Over the years, the seat has been won by different parties. In 2011 and 2016, Shaoni Singha Roy of Congress won it. BJP's Gauri Shankar Ghosh secured the seat in 2021. Roy, who now represents the TMC, is expected to give an intense fight to Ghosh this time. Congress has fielded Siddiqi Ali from here. Murshidabad is one of the rare seats in Bengal where multi-cornered fight will be fought. 6. Kharagpur Sadar: The seat will witness an intense contest between BJP's Dilip Ghosh and TMC's Pradeep Sarkar. In 2016, Ghosh secured the seat. In 2021, BJP's Hiran Chatterjee retained the seat, defeating Sarkar narrowly. Ghosh, who served as the party's West Bengal state president from 2015 to 2021, may reportedly have a small edge. 7. Kolkata Port: Kolkata Port is situated on the city's western fringes along the Hooghly River. It comprises densely populated neighbourhoods and a sizeable minority voter base. Kolkata Port has been a TMC bastion, held by Firhad Hakim, who romped home to victory in 2021. The BJP and Congress will try to make inroads this time. 8. Ballygunge: This seat has voters of roughly 2.75 lakh, including Urdu-speaking Muslims, Bengali and non-Bengali Hindus and a small Christian population. Since 2006, this constituency has been a TMC seat. The TMC defeated the Left that year. As MLA Babul Supriyo has moved to the Rajya Sabha, the TMC has choose its next candidate here. 9. Bhangar: It is situated in the South 24-Parganas district. In 2024, Bhangar was brought under Kolkata Police jurisdiction due to continued political violence. In 2021, ISF's Nawsad Siddique, the only non-BJP opposition MLA in the assembly, bagged the seat by more than 26,000 votes. A new electoral understanding struck between the ISF and the CPI(M) -- which won the seat multiple times between 1972 and 2011 -- could further boost Siddique's position. There's rivalry within the TMC -- allegedly between party strongman Arabul Islam and Saokat Molla, the MLA from neighbouring Canning Purba -- which poses a huge challenge to the prospects of the party in this seat. 10. Baruipur Paschim: Since 2011, the seat has been held by Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee. It has been a TMC for a long time. The seat has more than 2.32 lakh registered voters and over 30 per cent of them are Muslims. In 2021, the BJP poses a serious challenge to TMC, bagging almost 28 per cent of the votes. 11. Dinhata: This constituency is in North Bengal's Cooch Behar district. It is one of the most politically volatile segments. Intense fights between the TMC and the BJP have taken place here in recent years. Till 2011, it remained a bastion of Forward Bloc. Later, the TMC wrested the seat. In the 2021 state polls, Union Minister Nisith Pramanik of the BJP narrowly defeated Udayan Guha, a senior TMC leader. This reflected the party's growing influence in the region. Guha later made a comeback after Pramanik vacated the seat to retain his position in the Lok Sabha. 12. Asansol Dakshin: It is located in the industrial belt of Paschim Bardhaman district. The constituency showcases the urban and coal-mining heartland of western Bengal. Currently, it is represented by BJP's Agnimitra Paul since 2021.
