Kali Puja-Diwali eve violations a noisy omen for city, cops, PCB | Kolkata News - The Times of India

Kolkata: Pockets in Kolkata and the fringes saw brazen violation of norms as crackers were burst on the eve of Kali Puja and Diwali. This occurred even as cops and WBPCB intensified their vigil, prompting a spike in arrests and seizures. Activists are worried this could turn into worse rule-flouting on Kali Puja night.Though the day started on a quiet note, as the evening progressed, residents in several parts of south Kolkata -- Gariahat, Golpark, Kasba, Behala, Sarsuna, Santoshpur, Bansdroni, and New Alipore -- complained of back-to-back bursting of crackers and the release of shells in the night sky. Violations were reported at Taltala, College Street, Amherst Street, and even areas in Salt Lake and New Town.A Kolkata Police officer said there have been 50 FIRs till 6 pm on Sunday, and 21 people were arrested. The numbers were set to rise further by midnight, cops said. In Bidhannagar, 13 were arrested for trade and storage of banned crackers, and nine cases were registered till Sunday evening."Since 7 pm, the noise was so loud that even with doors and windows closed, the sound of bombs and shells could be heard. My 7-year-old daughter kept asking me how crackers could be burst even after a team of cops had visited her school and told them only mild green crackers would be burst between 8 pm and -10 pm on Monday. I didn't have an answer to her question," said Aparna Saha, a resident of New Alipore. The situation was similar in Dhakuria, Alipore, and other areas. "Shells were burst since evening, leaving my ailing mother in discomfort and my pet scared. It was clear that costly shells were fired from the top of high-rises," said Raja Bhattacharya of Sarsuna. In Dhakuria, Pratip Dey, whose mother had an operation, said: "Cops come on rounds. The moment they leave, noise pollution returns despite a hospital less than 100 m from our residence." Cops said during a raid on Sunday, at least three residents from the Deshapriya Park area were stopped, and illegal sky lanterns were seized from them. A few hours later, the same area reported shells being fired during a party on the terrace of a multi-storey building.According to WBPCB, its Command Control Centre at headquarters became operational on Sunday evening and will function round-the-clock until Tuesday night. Five mobile squads are on the ground in Kolkata, while each of the 11 regional offices in the districts has deployed two teams. Till Sunday, Kolkata Police seized over 6,050 kg of firecrackers. Bidhannagar cops have so far seized around 300 kg of banned crackers."The order is clear: only green fireworks with registration numbers are allowed. Violations will invite fines and imprisonment," said Naba Dutta of the environmental group Sabuj Mancha.
