New Delhi: What was being discreetly sold under the table just two days ago is now out in the open. With the Supreme Court permitting the sale of green crackers, hundreds of shoppers poured into the narrow lanes of Old Delhi on Wednesday in anticipation of purchasing firecrackers. However, as per the apex court's order, the sale is officially allowed only from Oct 18 to 20.Traders are now faced with the question of implementation as well as logistics. Harjeet Singh Chhabra, general secretary, Sadar Nishkam Welfare Association, said even though the ban has been lifted, what qualifies as a 'green' cracker is still a mystery for most. "Also, it's just three days before the festivities begin, how are we expected to manage everything, that too with restrictions, within that time?" he asked, worried that many small traders may end up unintentionally violating the conditions imposed. While industry bodies have appreciated the order, they echoed concerns about its practical application. Chamber of Trade and Industry chairman Brijesh Goyal said although he welcomes the decision, with barely five days left for Diwali, obtaining licences and arranging supplies of green crackers will be a major challenge. Sellers also wondered how they would arrange the stocks at such short notice. All this, however, has not dimmed the positive impact of the decision on business. Paramjit Singh Pamma, president, Sadar Bazar Bari Market, said the lifting of the ban is likely to draw more shoppers. They had a wide selection of 'green' firecrackers with photos of popular cartoon characters on the packets. Most firecrackers marketed as 'green' or 'eco-friendly' are decorated with images of leaves and trees, but lack the all-important CSIR-NEERI and PESO logo and QR code required to verify their authenticity.
