Kolkata: The alleged molestation of a teenage OPD patient at SSKM Hospital has exposed how easily rogue elements enter the hospital premises. Insiders at govt hospitals in the city said the unchecked presence of unauthorised persons, including touts, leaves patients and their families vulnerable.The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon in the ground-floor washroom of the Trauma Care Centre, attached to a PPP-run MRI and CT scan centre. SSKM officials called the incident unfortunate but insisted there was no security lapse. "It was massively crowded at that point as patients and relatives thronged the PPP-run investigation centre. Patients often use that washroom before or after investigations. It is really difficult to restrict entry," said an official. "Moreover, the accused, to disguise himself, had a green surgical suit on, similar to what doctors and technicians wear in OTs as he accompanied the girl." Following the complaint, SSKM officials scanned CCTV footage of the particular area and found the accused accompanying the girl to the ground floor of Trauma Care Centre. "The accused can be seen with the girl inside the building around 1 pm. We checked the records with our agency to see if this youth was enrolled in our hospital in any capacity but there is no such indication. The gown the accused was seen in is available in the market. He must have procured one with some intentions," said an official at the hospital.Following the rape and murder of a PGT doctor at RG Kar, all govt hospitals, especially the ones in Kolkata, stepped up security measures. Apart from increasing manpower and gadgets, like CCTV cameras, those entering wards are checked more strictly than earlier. "The security measures have been made stringent at our hospital, especially after the RG Kar crime," said a junior doctor at SSKM Hospital. "This molestation is shocking, especially since someone, who is supposed to be part of the hospital system, is being accused of perpetrating a crime of this nature on a teenaged patient." The majority of Group D staff, which includes ward boys and housekeeping members, are now hired from govt-approved agencies. Sources said they were required to wear their identity cards during duty hours. Most followed this rule, especially immediately after the RG Kar crime, but some said there had been some lapse.Hospital administrators across govt hospitals, however, agreed the presence of touts on hospital premises was still a big concern. They said most of these touts had close contact with Group D staff. "Gullible patients are vulnerable to the activities of these touts. But regular police raids and monitoring by the hospital have reduced their influence," said an official of another medical college in Kolkata.
