Chennai: The cause of Sunday's goods train derailment and fire near Tiruvallur, which affected rail services, is still under probe. The Tiruvallur collector said a crack was found on the tracks, raising concerns about maintenance. Railway officials denied this. "There was a crack on the track. Whether this caused the derailment can be known only after investigation. But this puts a spotlight on track maintenance lapses," said Tiruvallur collector M Prathap. "There were no signs of sabotage," he said.The railway uses ultrasonic flaw detection (UFD) instruments periodically to identify issues on the track. The panel is investigating mechanical, wagon issue, and sabotage angles, among others."There are also speculations about a hot axle -- an overheated axle bearing in a railway vehicle, often due to inadequate lubrication or bearing failure. Owing to changes in wheel and axle alignment, the bearings get danaged. This can also cause derailment," said a railway official.The train incident occurred around 5.30 am. when a diesel-laden goods train from Chennai Harbour to Walajah Road Siding was exiting Tiruvallur station. Several wagons, starting from the third, derailed and caught fire. The loco pilot applied emergency brakes, and the station master promptly cut off overhead power. The fire spread to 18 wagons and blanketed nearby localities in black smoke. No injuries were reported. Divisional railway manager B Vishwanath Eerya said three lines have become operational. The cause is under investigation," he said. Collector Prathap said those evacuated from colonies nearby have returned to their homes.
