Chennai: Preliminary investigations attribute the fire on the goods train near Tiruvallur to a possible spark from overhead electrical equipment (OHE) igniting fuel leaking from a derailed wagon.The incident paralysed services on the busy Chennai-Arakkonam route and left nearby residents engulfed in thick black smoke. The disruption left thousands of rail passengers stranded, many of whom were unable to get updates as railway helplines went unanswered for hours. The train carrying diesel from Chennai Harbour to Walajah Road Siding was exiting Tiruvallur station around 5.30am on Sunday, when a few wagons caught fire. This led to some wagons, starting from the third from the engine, derailing. Upon seeing the fire, the loco pilot applied emergency brakes, and the station master immediately cut off the overhead power supply."It is suspected that the third wagon derailed, and the watertight lid may have come off. The spark from the OHE mast may have triggered the fire," said a railway official. By the time the train was brought to a halt, the fire spread up to the 19th wagon, and the locality came under a blanket of black smoke. Baby, a resident of the nearby colony, said that all the residents, especially children, were frightened upon seeing the huge blaze.According to Seema Agarwal, DGP, TN Fire and Rescue Services, a total of 17 vehicles from the department and seven private vehicles were involved in fighting the fire. A total of 70 fire personnel, including officers, were pressed into service. Fire-fighting teams and NDRF battled the blaze for hours as residents living nearby were evacuated. No injuries were reported. From the goods train, 30 unaffected wagons and the locomotive were safely detached and isolated from the site. While 18 wagons were gutted in the fire, four trailing wagons were safely removed from the spot. Members of the public also helped the railway officials shift the wagons."The situation was brought under control by noon. Trains towards Chennai were stopped at Arakkonam. Passengers stranded at intermediate stations were provided alternative transport through MTC buses. A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the incident," said B Vishwanath Eerya, divisional railway manager, Chennai division, Southern Railway.The intensity of the fire and derailment forced Southern Railway to suspend train operations on the crucial Chennai-Arakkonam stretch, affecting long-distance connections to Bengaluru, Kerala, and Tirupati. At least 12 mail/express trains from Chennai Central were cancelled, while several others were diverted or short-terminated. Tiruvallur collector M Prathap said residents of nearby colonies were shifted to nearby schools. "We also shifted patients from nearby hospitals as the smoke engulfed the locality," he said. MTC MD T Prabhushankar said that from Sunday morning till noon, 84 buses from TNSTC-Villupuram and 30 buses from MTC were deployed to ferry stranded passengers.Meanwhile, passengers faced hardships as the helplines 044-25354151 and 044-24354995 went unanswered. "I kept calling to check the status of my train, but it was not working," said R Kumar, a passenger who took a cab from Alandur to Arakkonam after learning about the diversion of Trivandrum Mail (train number 12623). With express trains halted at Arakkonam and other intermediate stations, people scrambled for alternative transport options.
