Bathinda: Amidst the ongoing debate over the contribution of stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana to the worsening air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR) at the onset of winter, Climate Trends, a research-based consultancy, has analysed centrally sourced data about the impact of stubble burning on Delhi's PM2.5. This comparative analysis covers Oct 2024 versus Oct 2025.The data underscores that reducing farm fires alone can yield immediate benefits, but structural air quality gains require multi-sectoral emission control beyond agriculture. It was found that even with fires curtailed, Delhi's PM2.5 remained above 50 µg/m³, revealing a significant background load from other sources -- traffic, industries, and dust resuspension. On Oct 11, 2025, only 20 stubble fire counts were recorded in both states, but Delhi PM2.5 was recorded at 74.02 µg/m³. In comparison, 232 farm fire events were recorded in both states on Oct 12, 2024, and Delhi PM2.5 was recorded at almost similar levels at 74.79 µg/m³. This analysis examines the relationship between stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana and PM2.5 levels in Delhi during the first twelve days of October for two consecutive years, offering a compelling natural experiment in air quality management. The floods of 2025 unintentionally achieved what policy enforcement often struggles to do -- a 77.5% drop in stubble burning -- leading to a notable 15.5% reduction in Delhi's PM2.5.This reinforces that controlling agricultural burning is critical for Delhi's clean air, but sustained air quality improvement will depend on addressing urban and industrial emissions as well. The year 2025 was marked by massive floods in Punjab, which significantly disrupted agricultural activities and crop residue management. This climatic anomaly provides a unique lens to understand how changes in stubble burning influence Delhi's air quality.Combined stubble burning events in Punjab and Haryana were 779 from October 1 to 12 in 2024, with average Delhi PM2.5 at 60.79 µg/m³. For the corresponding period in 2025, there were 175 events, and the average Delhi PM2.5 stood at 51.48 µg/m³, with a decrease of 15.5%.Meanwhile, the analysis by Climate Trends of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data from 2021-2025 shows that Delhi's air pollution levels during Diwali 2025 surged to dangerous highs, with PM2.5 concentrations averaging 488 µg/m³ post-Diwali. Over the five-year analysis, data shows a consistent Diwali-related pollution spike, with PM2.5 values typically doubling or tripling during the festival night and persisting through the next day. Firecracker emissions remain the dominant cause of Delhi's short-term air quality collapse during the festive period. It was found that the 2025 Diwali recorded a post-Diwali PM2.5 average of 488 µg/m³, a 212% rise from pre-Diwali levels. Peak concentration hit 675 µg/m³ late night on October 20, 2025, despite few stubble burning events. MSID:: 124720102 413 |
Delhi's air pollution continues to worsen, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting a hazardous 490, despite the government's 21-point plan to tackle the issue. The city’s residents are struggling to breathe, even indoors, and hospitals are overwhelmed with patients facing respiratory problems. This pollution not only threatens public health but also jeopardizes Delhi's economic future, as it could drive away professionals and harm business ...Read More >
