Complexes go green, say 'no' to illegal firecrackers... | Kolkata News - The Times of India

Kolkata: Determined to keep Diwali and Kali Puja festivities safe and pollution-free, residents' welfare associations (RWAs) across Kolkata and New Town have urged citizens to strictly follow Supreme Court guidelines on bursting firecrackers. From awareness posters to patrolling inside complexes, they are pleading with residents to burn only green crackers -- and that too strictly between 8 pm and 10 pm -- while discouraging any use of banned or high-decibel varieties that could endanger lives and property.Across major housing complexes in Kolkata and New Town, RWAs have issued advisories discouraging the use of hazardous fireworks and reminding residents of the environmental and safety implications. At South City, the welfare association has gone a step further by forming a dedicated team to monitor compliance. Each cracker box brought to the designated area beside the garden will be checked to ensure it meets the green cracker standard, said a senior association member.Similar vigilance measures are being enforced at Sunrise Heights in Beleghata, where both towers' rooftops will be locked on Monday evening. "Residents have been instructed to burst fireworks only in identified open areas. Children must be accompanied by adults and maintain a safe distance," said Jayesh Kumar Jha, an RWA official.Police, too, have stepped up enforcement ahead of the festival. Officers of Kolkata and Bidhannagar Police have been visiting housing complexes and block committees across the city to spread awareness about the firecracker ban and the severe penalties for violating it. Authorities have warned that anyone found selling, transporting, or using banned crackers could face prosecution under the Explosives Substances Act."Residents have been urged to avoid burning crackers altogether and make Diwali and Kali Puja a celebration of light rather than smoke and fire," said Sudip Roychowdhury of Daffodil Heights in Tollygunge.Bidhannagar Police have also reminded citizens that the ban on sky lanterns remains in force, especially in areas like Lake Town, Salt Lake, and New Town. Sky lanterns, they warned, pose a serious risk to aircraft as they can be drawn into engines during descent. In Rajarhat's Siddha Pines, the RWA has prohibited rockets and other high-risk fireworks inside the complex.
