Kolkata: Bidhannagar police have prohibited residents from accessing terraces and rooftops of high-rises in New Town, Rajarhat, Salt Lake, Lake Town, and areas near Kolkata airport after sundown from Sunday to Thursday. The measure has been taken so that the residents can't release sky lanterns and burst crackers during Diwali.Local police stations have sent letters to residents' welfare associations to ensure no one is allowed on the rooftops from 5 pm onwards between Oct 19 and Oct 23. "Requests made to RWAs to stop residents from bursting and burning crackers from terraces haven't yielded positive results in the past. We understand it may cause dissatisfaction among a section of residents who may want to watch the lit-up night sky from the rooftops. But we are forced to take the decision after due consultation and in the larger interest of the people, as rockets and shells released from terraces can harm aircraft movement as well as cause fire-related mishaps on the establishments below," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. In an effort to strictly enforce the Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders on fireworks restrictions, cops started an awareness campaign at high-rises last week. Each police station was instructed to visit housing complexes, call their representatives for joint meetings, and make them aware of the dos and don'ts this Diwali.Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma said they met the representatives of RWAs on multiple occasions and apprised them of the consequences of burning banned crackers, including the legal implications associated with burning any crackers other than green crackers. Sources at Lalbazar stated that high-rises in Kolkata have also been advised to keep their terraces shut after 10 pm on Diwali. The high-rises have also taken a slew of measures to slay the noise demon. While there will be volunteers among South City residents to ensure only green crackers are burst between 8 pm and 10 pm on Monday, Daffodil Greens in Tollygunge has banned the bursting of any form of sound crackers within the compound. "No major aerial firecrackers will be allowed to be burnt on the terraces as well as in the compound. Only small sparklers and other safe non-sound and less polluting crackers are allowed," said Sudip Roychowdhury, secretary at Daffodil Greens in Tollygunge. At Siddha Pines in Rajarhat, a designated area has been made within the complex, and they have banned the bursting of rockets, shells, and firepots alongside sky lanterns following an accident the complex encountered two years ago. The resident welfare associations in New Town are welcoming the police move. "The rooftops are kept open for emergency purposes, but in general, residents are not allowed to enter the rooftop of our housing blocks. We support the police's move," said Rosedale housing complex association President Manoj Sharma.
