Jaipur: The state transport department has given a deadline of Oct 31 to private bus operators to check all safety features in buses, such as installation of fire extinguishers and functional emergency exits. After a meeting with senior officials from the state transport department Friday, private bus operators called off their strike that they were planning to hold on Diwali. As part of the Safe Travel campaign, conducted by RTO Jaipur (I) to check vehicles ferrying school children, the transport department has asked private bus operators to follow safety guidelines before the department starts taking action. "You are all requested to complete safety inspections of all your buses within the last 13 days of Oct, make necessary improvements, and provide a compliance report to this office. Following this, a thorough inspection campaign will be conducted by specially formed joint teams of the department. If vehicles are found operating in violation of the rules, legal action will be taken and illegal buses will be seized," states a letter issued by RTO Jaipur (I) to private bus operators. To ensure strict compliance with the rules of the bus body code, a two-tier action plan will be initiated, said officials. In the first phase, from Oct 27-31, flying squads of RTO Jaipur will conduct inspections. Private bus operators have been instructed to ensure that emergency gates are installed in all buses as per standards, that fire extinguishers and hammers are available with each sleeper in sleeper buses, that rooftop luggage carriers are removed from all buses, and that all unauthorised modifications from sleeper buses, like additional seats/sleepers, are removed. They must also correct other changes made contrary to the approved bus body code. "In the second phase, from Nov 1-30, vehicles that do not meet the bus body code will be issued challans or seized, and in serious cases, vehicle registration or permits will be suspended or cancelled. Additionally, the modifications to the buses will be cut so that they are in their original state," said a senior official from the transport department.
