T'puram/Kochi/Kozhikode: The nationwide strike called by central trade unions demanding a rollback of labour reforms and protection of public sector institutions brought Kerala to a near-total standstill on Wednesday.All sectors -- except essential services -- were paralysed, with shops, factories, offices and educational institutions shut across the state. Public transport took a major hit, leaving many stranded at bus stands and railway stations. Scattered incidents of violence and clashes were reported from multiple districts.Govt establishments, including the Secretariat, wore a deserted look despite the state govt invoking 'dies non' -- denying leave and salary benefits to striking employees. At the Secretariat, where around 4,700 employees are posted, nearly 90% remained absent. Key departments like general administration, finance and law functioned with skeletal staff.Only private vehicles could be seen on the roads, with KSRTC buses and most other public transport staying off. In Thiruvananthapuram, striking workers marched to Raj Bhavan in a major show of strength. Labour and education minister V Sivankutty joined the march, walking from his official residence to the CPM district office. Defending the strike, he said it was a conscious protest to protect hard-won labour rights, not an act of betrayal against the public.Employees in banking and insurance sectors also participated, with major unions like AIBEA, AIBOA and BEFI demanding withdrawal of the Centre's 'anti-worker' labour codes, permanent appointments, stricter loan recovery norms and an end to outsourcing. In several districts protestors clashed with govt staff who defied the strike call. At Aruvikkara Govt LPS School, five teachers were locked inside a classroom by protesters and had to wait for police to free them. KSRTC buses were blocked in Thampanoor and Attingal and passengers were asked to disembark. Protesters confronted staff at Ayoor post office, prompting police intervention.In Ernakulam, the bandh was near-total and mostly peaceful, barring an incident in Muvattupuzha where a KSRTC bus was pelted with stones. Two protesters were arrested. No services operated from the Ernakulam depot. A low-floor service attempted by BMS workers to Kozhikode was blocked by strike supporters.In Kozhikode, KSRTC managed only two early morning trips. A private jeep offering free rides to patients from the railway station to the Govt Medical College was vandalised. Attendance at the district collectorate was thin, with only 20 of 220 staff reporting. At Mukkam civil station, clashes broke out as protesters threatened staff. CPM leaders reportedly warned fish vendors at Mukkam they would pour kerosene on the fish if stalls weren't shut.In Wayanad and Malappuram, the strike was near-complete. At Manjeri, police intervened as protesters blocked private vehicles. In Kannur and Kasaragod, shops remained shut and KSRTC services were halted. At Sreekandapuram and Thalassery, teachers who reported to duty were threatened; protesters deflated a teacher's car and police had to disperse the crowd.In Guruvayur, strike supporters allegedly attacked an open hotel and a textile shop. Some hotels reopened in the evening, but protesters again tried to shut them. The Guruvayur Devaswom's Annadanam provided relief, serving lunch to over 10,000 devotees and breakfast to 3,000. A supermarket on Pattikkad-Peechi Road was attacked, and a local TV crew filming the incident was assaulted.
