MCD writes to vet dept on controlling pigeon population in city | Delhi News - Times of India

New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi's public health department recently wrote to the veterinary department, requesting an examination of the issue of controlling the pigeon population in Delhi. In correspondence dated July 8, additional municipal health officer informed the veterinary department about concerns raised during the June 27 standing committee meeting regarding pigeon overpopulation and potential health risks from their droppings."It is pertinent to mention that there is no data available to quantify disease due to pigeons in Delhi; however, due to the increased pigeon population and also squatters and hawkers selling food grains to the public to feed pigeons, this has to be regulated," states the letter, seeking the veterinary department's involvement. The letter continues, "The veterinary department is requested to examine the issue of controlling the pigeon population in Delhi." An official said the matter belongs to the veterinary department; hence they have been asked to take steps to control feeding in public spaces and establish guidelines for feeding locations.According to the letter, the growing pigeon-related issues were discussed at the June 27 standing committee meeting. Throughout the city, numerous public spaces, including footpaths, junctions, traffic islands, and roundabouts, serve as pigeon feeding locations.A senior public health department official from MCD indicated that while the regulation strategy remains in its early phases, unrestricted food availability is leading to substantial growth in pigeon numbers. "There are health risks linked to pigeon droppings, which can carry pathogens and influenza," the official stated. No comment was received on the further steps taken by the civic body to deal with the issue.
