New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi's public health department has launched an intensive drive to check mosquito breeding at historical sites and tourist places in the city. At least 55 such places were checked in the past few days and mosquito breeding was found at 16 sites, which were destroyed on the spot, MCD stated. The department claimed to have visited Humayun's Tomb, Delhi zoo, Qutub Minar complex, Lotus Pond, Sunder Nagar Nursery, etc. While 16 violators were served notices, prosecution was launched against six of them, MCD stated. Such places have vast green areas, which increase the possibility of mosquito breeding during rain, said officials."To prevent vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya, MCD is carrying out a special intensive checking drive to prevent mosquito breeding. Aedes mosquitoes breed in clean stored water such as drums, coolers, tins, tyres, kabad, flower pots, money plants and overhead tanks," stated the department. This year, around 200 dengue cases were reported so far, less than 250 cases recorded during the same period last year.Officials said mosquito breeding was easily preventable by stopping water stagnation at the source. "There are several places that are highly prone to mosquito breeding, such as construction sites, parks and nurseries, govt offices, police stations with malkhana, DTC depots, Delhi Jal Board drains, waterbodies, monuments and tourist spots," said an official. "While our department is conducting regular checks of all vulnerable spots and departments in campaign mode, we are communicating with the departments concerned to take corrective measures and spray insecticides," said an official.
