T'puram/Kozhikode: There are a total of 498 people on the Nipah contact list in state, said health minister Veena George on Wednesday. Of these, 203 are in Malappuram, 116 in Kozhikode, 177 in Palakkad and two in Ernakulam districts.In Malappuram, 11 people are undergoing treatment, with two in the ICU and so far, 46 samples tested negative. In Palakkad, three people are being treated in isolation, five tested negative and two were discharged. In the state, 29 people are under high-risk observation and 116 are under high-risk category monitoring. A confirmed Nipah patient is in the ICU in Kozhikode.Central team visits Malappuram districtThe national joint outbreak response team dispatched by Union ministry of health and family welfare on Wednesday visited Malappuram district.The 10-member team led by National Centre for Disease Control joint director Dr Pranoy Varma comprised experts from National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, wildlife specialist, veterinary consultant and experts from animal husbandry department. They held talks with Malappuram DMO Dr R Renuka.The team visited Kozhikode medical college, where a 38-year-old Nipah-positive woman from Palakkad is undergoing treatment and reviewed her medical records. The health condition of the 38-year-old patient from Palakkad and the follow-up measures taken after the death of 18-year-old Malappuram-native girl, who died of Nipah at a private hospital in Kozhikode on July 1 and whose autopsy was conducted at the medical college, were evaluated during the meeting.Another team from NIV, Pune, which will conduct survey and monitor bats, will visit Malappuram district soon. The team is currently in Palakkad where a Nipah-positive case was reported.Meanwhile, a 78-year-old woman, who was in the contact list of an 18-year-old Malappuram-native woman who died of Nipah infection, passed away on Wednesday. However, the samples of the elderly woman tested negative in TrueNat tests following which health department authorities allowed the woman's funeral to be conducted by adhering to safety protocols.The hospital authorities had allowed the woman's relatives to take the body in the afternoon. Later, health authorities instructed them to put off the funeral till the Nipah test results were available.
