Nagpur: All the 33 gates of the Gosikhurd dam in Bhandara were opened on Wednesday, leading to a flow of 13,000 cubic meters per second (cumecs) into the Wainganga River, affecting pockets in Bhandara and Gadchiroli. Nagpur, on the other hand, remained safe due to low rain in Madhya Pradesh. A higher flow in Pench River from the Madhya Pradesh side can lead to flooding in Nagpur.The Gosikhurd dam has a capacity of holding 740 million cubic meters (MCM) of water, and more than 1,000MCM was discharged into the Wainganga River due to the heavy rain, said sources. The level in the dam was maintained at 25% of the total capacity to prevent any flooding or damage to the dam structure due to heavy inflow, said sources in the state's water resources department (WRD).None of the gates of the Totladoh dam in the Pench River, from where Nagpur gets its water supply, were opened. Like Totladoh in Maharashtra, the Chaurai dam is located on the river's upstream in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district. While parts of Vidarbha were lashed by heavy downpour, only 22mm rainfall was recorded in Chaurai's catchment area. This kept the water level in Totladoh at 54%. Had it rained heavily in Madhya Pradesh, the gates of the Chaurai dam might have been opened too, leading to a flood-like situation in Nagpur, explained sources.With water released from Gosikhurd dam, pockets in Bhandara and Gadchiroli were impacted. However, officials said the situation was not unprecedented. In 2020, more than 30,000cumecs of water was released and Bhandara town was flooded. In 2025, over 15,000cumecs of water was released, and it was 17,000 in 2023 and 2022, according to the WRD data. A higher inflow may have impacted some villages in Gadchiroli, a source said.The WRD opened all 38 gates of the Chichdoh barrage in Gadchiroli district, leading to a flow of more than 7,000cumecs of water. At the Dhapewada barrage in Gondia, 24 gates were opened, leading to a flow of 8,200cumecs. The gates of the Pujari Tola dam in Gondia district were also opened, with 330cumecs flowing out. In case of heavy rain, releasing water is the only option to protect dam structure from damage, said WRD officials. The district administration in the affected areas had issued warnings to residents living close to the riverbanks.

Nagpur: The Vidarbha region recorded normal rainfall from June 1 to September 30, 2025, during the monsoon season, according to data released by the Regional Meteorological Centre, Nagpur.
