Rain boosts water levels in Vidarbha dams; 9 gates of Gosikhurd opened | Nagpur News - Times of India

Nagpur: The water resources department (WRD) is closely monitoring the situation in all major dams and reservoirs in the Vidarbha region following incessant rains. Water levels are being managed meticulously by releasing water into rivers to avoid flooding.Nine out of the 33 gates of the Gosikhurd Dam -- the region's largest irrigation project -- were opened on Monday, allowing over 1,100 cubic meters per second (cumecs) of water to flow into the Wainganga River. This has kept the water level in Gosikhurd at around 25%.The Totladoh Dam, which caters to the city, is currently 52% full, while the Kamptee Khairi reservoir -- fed by Totladoh -- is at 82% capacity. The gates of Totladoh have not yet been opened; however, the situation is being closely monitored, said sources. Notably, both dams were at similar levels on this date last year.At the Lower Wardha Dam, the water level reached 42% by Monday noon and continues to rise gradually. The WRD has alerted the district collectors of Wardha, Yavatmal, and Amravati about the possibility of water release from the dam.In Gadchiroli district, the Chichdoh Barrage is being kept empty by allowing the entire inflow to pass through. With all its gates open, over 3,800 cumecs of water are currently being released. The district administration expects a total flow of 6,000 cumecs in the Wainganga River. A couple of internal roads in the district were closed but reopened to traffic by evening. In Gondia as well, 9 out of 23 gates of the Dhapewada Dam were opened by evening, releasing 3,000 cumecs of water. As of Monday, the average water level in all major dams in the Nagpur division stood at 39%, compared to 38% on the same day last year. In the Amravati division, major dams were at 33% capacity, slightly lower than the 35% recorded during the corresponding period last year, according to data compiled by the state's water resources department.
