Pune: The city and ghat areas recorded heavy showers over the weekend and will see more rain this week, stated the forecast of India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday. The met department has issued an orange alert for Pune on Monday and a yellow alert for Tuesday. This weekend, ghat sections in Pune experienced heavy showers, with Bhira recording 145mm rainfall, Nimgiri 85.5mm and Lonavala 72mm. Some ghat locations also had light to heavy showers ranging from 30-60mm, including Shirgaon, Ambone, and Talegaon. Key locations in the city witnessed persistent rainfall, too, between 8.30pm on Saturday and 8.30am on Sunday, namely Shivajinagar (36.9mm), Pashan (42.6mm), Lohegaon (51.4mm), Chinchwad (66mm), Lavale (30.5mm), and Koregaon Park (28mm) . The irrigation department on Sunday morning released water at around 10,000 cusecs from Khadakwasla dam after heavy showers were recorded in the catchment areas of the dams that provide water to civic areas. The discharge was reduced to a speed of 4,510 cusecs in the afternoon after a decrease in showers. Rainfall recorded on Sunday in the catchments of various dams was reported as 18mm for Temghar, 23mm for Varasgaon and Panshet each, and 24 mm for Khadakwasla . The collective storage of the dams was 99.34%, compared to total storage capacity. As per IMD officials, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20cm) was recorded at many places over Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada, as well as at isolated places over the Gujarat region this weekend. Met officials said Saturday's depression over south interior Odisha moved nearly westwards and weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over West Vidarbha and adjoining North Madhya Maharashtra on Sunday. It is likely to weaken further into a low-pressure area during the next 24 hours and may continue to move nearly westwards across North Madhya Maharashtra, South Gujarat, and Saurashtra during Sept 28-30, after which it could emerge as a low-pressure area over the Northeast Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast by Oct 1. A trough runs from the well-marked low-pressure area over West Vidarbha and adjoining North Madhya Maharashtra to the west central Bay of Bengal across South Chhattisgarh and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. "Under the influence of these systems, rainfall is likely in various parts of Maharashtra during the week," a senior IMD official told TOI. The IMD forecast predicted: "Light to moderate rain/thunderstorm at most/many places with heavy rainfall are likely over Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra during the next seven days. This includes Marathwada on Sept 28 and Gujarat from Sept 28 to Oct 1 with very heavy rainfall at some places over Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat on Sept 28-29, and in Saurashtra and Kutch from Sept 28-30. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall may be seen over North Konkan (including Mumbai)." IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off Konkan and Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, and adjoining sea areas during Sept 28-30, Konkan and Goa coasts from Sept 30 to Oct 2, South Gujarat on Sept 28, and the entire Gujarat coast from Sept 29 to Oct 3. From Oct 1-3, they have been asked to avoid venturing into the Bay of Bengal along coasts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and into the Andaman Sea; similarly, from Sept 28 to Oct 1, the advisory cautions against getting into the Andaman Sea, the Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coasts, the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjoining Comorin area.
