KOLKATA: With the mercury dipping below 14 degrees before Dec 15, winter has set in early this year. In the past 11 years, the mercury dipped below 14 degrees before Dec 15 only once - in 2014. Even as the city started yearning for the chill, the Met office predicted a slight rise in mercury from Monday due to twin weather systems - one over the Bay of Bengal and another over north India. The minimum temperature plunged to 13.8 degrees on Thursday. The only time it dipped this low before the Dec fortnight was a decade ago. In the past two days, there has been a slight rise, with it standing at 14 degrees on both days, 2.1 notches below normal. The Met office expects it to hover around the 13-degree mark on Sunday too before it starts climbing slightly. The maximum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius on Saturday was three degrees below normal. "By Monday, it could reach around 15 degrees Celsius and swing between 15 and 16 degrees for the next few days. Despite the rise, the mercury will be near normal, and the cold feeling will stay," said H R Biswas, head of the weather section at the Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata. In the past two years, the coldest Dec days were on the 17th when the city recorded 13.7 and 13.2 degrees Celsius, respectively. With the coldest Dec being recorded in the latter half of the month each year, the Met office is hopeful of the chill towards the month's end. But even as the Met office was expecting the mercury to dip around 12 degrees by this weekend, the twin weather systems are playing spoilsport. "A western disturbance over northern India and a likely formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal are the two main factors for halting the mercury from sliding further. The wind pattern, which was northerly, is becoming weak due to the twin weather systems," added Biswas. The dry northerly wind brings in the chill, while the easterly wind injects moisture into the land, pushing up the mercury. The low-pressure area may form by Sunday. But the system will not be strong enough to bring in rain. In some western districts, the temperature dipped below 10 degrees on Saturday. The mercury plunged to 7.9 degrees Celsius in Purulia, while in Sriniketan, the Met office recorded 9.1 degrees. On Saturday, cold wave conditions persisted in seven districts of West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, East and West Burdwan. Purulia and West Burdwan are expected to be under cold wave conditions on Sunday as well.
Chennai Rain: A low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has developed into a deep depression, according to latest report from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
