Hyderabad, July 5 (Maxim News): With just one day to go for Ashura, the historic Bibi ka Alam procession in Hyderabad is set to maintain its centuries-old tradition. Laxmi, a trained elephant from Tumkur, Karnataka, arrived in the city on Saturday to carry the revered alam on Sunday, July 6, during the solemn Muharram procession. This year's arrival came after some uncertainty, as the Telangana Forest Department earlier denied permission for an elephant from Delhi, citing logistical concerns. However, Laxmi's arrival now assures that the long-standing custom of carrying the alam on elephant-back will continue. The Bibi ka Alam, which commemorates Bibi Fatima, the daughter of Prophet Muhammad, is an integral part of Hyderabad's Ashura rituals. Dating back to the Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi dynasties, the procession is one of the most emotionally charged and spiritually significant events of the Islamic calendar in the city. Each year, the procession begins from Bibi ka Alawa in Dabeerpura and weaves through key parts of Hyderabad's Old City before concluding at Chaderghat.
