Nagpur prepares for solemn muharram observances | Nagpur News - Times of India

Nagpur: The city is preparing for Muharram with Ashura, 10th day of the Islamic month, set to be observed on Sunday by Shia and Sunni Muslims. The Dawoodi Bohra community solemnly observed Ashura, the 10th day of Moharram, on Saturday to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS), the beloved grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), who laid down his life in the historic battle of Karbala upholding values of justice, truth and righteousness, as per their calendar. Each group commemorates the day with distinct rituals, reflecting their spiritual tradition and devotion. For the Shia community, Ashura is a time of mourning, honouring the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in the Battle of Karbala. Naushad Ali Haidry, president of Shia Jamaat Trust, outlined a series of religious activities starting Saturday night (Shab e Ashura), continuing through Sunday. The observances begin with a majlis (religious gathering) at Maulana Akbar Ali's residence, followed by another at Haidry's home and Amale Shabe Ashoor at Jama Masjid Haidry. On Sunday, Namaaz-e-Ashoor, Ziyarat-e-Ashoor, and Salam will be offered, culminating in a majlis at Madrasa Hussainia Hall in Mominpura. A significant julus (religious procession) featuring matam will commence from Haidry Masjid, passing through Mominpura, Hansapuri, Rajwada, and Shukrwari Talao, before reaching Karbala at Imambada. A notable talwar-zanjeer matam kunji (sword and chain ritual) with condolences is scheduled around 2:30pm in front of Hafeez Bakery in Mominpura. The procession will return in the evening, concluding at Madrasa Hussainia Hall with majlis-e-sham-e-ghareeban and nayaaz. In Kamptee, 20km off Nagpur, thousands of Shia Muslims observe the day with mataam (self-flagellation) and majlis with Muharram processions, including taziya, proceeding from Bada Hussainabad to Kanhan River, upholding long-standing traditions.Sunni Muslims, meanwhile, will observe Ashura on the 9th and 10th of Muharram with fasting, prayers, and acts of charity, emphasising spiritual reflection. The Dawoodi Bohra community, following their unique calendar, already observed Ashura with online sermons and home-based prayers. Nagpur's diverse observances reflect the city's rich cultural and religious harmony, with authorities ensuring safety and smooth conduct of the processions. For Bohras, this year, the spiritually uplifting sermons of His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin were delivered in Chennai and relayed live across 24 cities and towns across Madhya Pradesh and South India. Thousands of Dawoodi Bohras gathered in mosques and community centres to participate in the sermons and majlis, reflecting on the timeless values embodied by Imam Husain. The commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing for truth and compassion, values that continue to inspire the Dawoodi Bohra community, said Qaid Joharbhai, joint secretary of Shantinagar Bohra Jamaat.
