Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday joined the Ashura, the 10th and concluding day of Muharram and joined thousands of Shia mourners (azadars) who commemorated martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) in the battle of Karbala. On Youm-e-Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, a large mourning procession is taken out in Srinagar's Bota Kadal in the Downtown part of the city. Mourners, wearing black dresses, recite elegies and flagellate their chests to show solidarity with the Karbala martyrs. LG Sinha joined the procession and draped the Zuljena(the symbolic holy horse) with embroidered, traditional cloth (chadar) at Bota Kadal. Sinha also distributed water among the mourners. The mourning procession in Srinagar taken out from Botakadal concluded at Imambara Zadibal in the Downtown part of the city. Roads along the procession are kept only for the processions, with stalls set up by volunteers for water and other juices which are distributed to the mourners. The security personnel are deployed along the route for thwarting any untoward incident, while traffic is kept off this part of the route. Similar processions were taken out in other parts of the valley where the Shia population lives. Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Bhirdi said the police has made elaborate arrangements for Muharram processions in the Srinagar city, and multiple security deployments have been done for hasslefree movement of people coming from other districts. For Muharram processions, the Jammu and Kashmir administration had issued directions for mourners to follow guidelines and warned action against breaching them. The police has registered an FIR against individuals accused of violating the guidelines on 8th Muharram procession road in the city, alleging that certain individuals committed deliberate and unlawful acts during the procession on MA Road. An FIR No. 41/2025 was registered at Police Station Kothibagh under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as the actions were intended to provoke unrest, disturb public order, and disrupt communal harmony, posing a serious threat to the security and integrity of the nation. Member of Parliament and National Conference leader, Aga Ruhullah Mehdi asked the Jammu and Kashmir police why it was booking people for "peaceful expression of support to Gaza". "To @JmuKmrPolice - a simple question: Are you serving us Kashmiris or enforcing the will of a Zionist regime? If you're serving us, then explain: Under what law are you filing FIRs against peaceful expression of support to Gaza? We await your answer," Mehdi wrote on X. A popular Shia leader Agha Syed Muhammad Hadi has also threatened protests on the 14th Muharram against this police action. The 8th and 10th Muharram processions were banned in Kashmir after 1989 with the eruption of militancy under then-Governor Jagmohan. Since then, Zuljanah processions were allowed only in the select Shia-populated localities. In 2023 the LG administration lifted the ban, allowing the processions to return to some selected traditional routes. Ashura Procession Taken Out In Budgam Besides Srinagar, the 10th Muharram (Ashura) procession was taken out in Shia dominated Budgam town. According to a government press statement, the main Zuljana procession began from Bab-Ul-Ilem Imambara in Mirgund early in the morning and is scheduled to culminate late in the evening at Daar-Ul-Mustafa, Budgam. Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Dr. Bilal Mohi-ud-Din Bhat, along with SSP Budgam, Nikhil Borkar participated in the procession from Mirgund.
