Ranchi: Thousands of students in the state, who have passed their matriculation exam this year, are staring at an uncertain future as the admission process to intermediate courses across 42 affiliated colleges in Jharkhand remain stalled. Over 27,000 such students are now facing the heat as the state school education and literacy department's directive to shift them to the nearest Plus Two schools or inter colleges is yet to be implemented. The crisis stemmed from the National Education Policy (NEP) directives to discontinue intermediate education in Classes XI and XII in degree colleges from the academic session 2024. Students who were admitted to Class XI in these colleges earlier this year were to be relocated to appropriate institutions within a five-kilometre radius. However, the shifting process has not yet commenced, severely impacting the continuity of their education. The Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) announced that intermediate examinations will be held in February 2026. With just seven months remaining, the lack of regular classes and structured learning poses makes the chances of performing well difficult, students said. Many of these students have not attended a single class for Class XII, and uncertainty looms over their registration process and new school placements.Tanishka Kumari, a student, said, "It's already July, and we haven't even started our Class 12 classes. We don't even know where we'll be registered or which school we'll attend. This uncertainty is affecting our confidence and future plans." As per norms, all 27,000 affected students will require a fresh registration number in Class XII, separate from what was issued in Class XI. An official of JAC said, "JAC plans to collect district-wise data on where each student has been relocated, along with their previous roll codes and numbers. It's internal work."Adding to their anxiety is confusion regarding the validity of their academic records. Students are unsure whether the Class XI results issued by their former colleges will be compatible with the evaluation process in schools they have yet to be enrolled in. "The students have already lost crucial months. The govt must expedite seat allotments and ensure adequate teaching support in the schools where they are to be enrolled," said an education officer requesting anonymity. The department has also issued directives regarding seat allotment for admissions in inter colleges with establishment permission and permanent approval for the academic session 2025-27. Colleges with establishment permission are permitted 128 seats per faculty, while permanently approved colleges are allotted 512 seats per faculty. "Admissions beyond these limits will not be registered by JAC, and principals will bear full responsibility for such violations. All student data must be uploaded on the U-DISE+ portal. No representation for over-admission or registration without Council approval will be entertained."Additionally, students of the 2024-26 batch from affiliated colleges must be enrolled in nearby govt or upgraded +2 high schools, or in eligible inter colleges within a 5-kilometre radius. "Requests for additional seats must be routed through district education officer for JAC's consideration. Previous orders allowing excess admissions now stand cancelled," the letter said. Education minister, Ramdas Soren, said, "We are working on the process and will ensure that every child gets admitted. The admission procedure is underway, and department is handling it with priority."
