Srinagar- The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has tightened eligibility norms for students appearing in Class X and XII board examinations, making 75% attendance mandatory. The Board clarified that Classes IX-X and XI-XII are two-year programmes, and students must study all subjects across both years to qualify. Internal assessment, now integral under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, requires regular attendance; without it, results cannot be declared. Defaulters will be placed in the Essential Repeat Category. CBSE also warned affiliated schools against offering unapproved subjects. Additional subjects are permitted -- two in Class X and one in Class XII -- only if schools have proper infrastructure and CBSE's permission. The move targets "dummy schools" that allow absentees to sit for exams. Officials stated that students found non-attending during inspections may be barred from board exams and will need to opt for the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) instead. Schools promoting the "dummy" culture face strict action under affiliation and examination bye-laws.
