Nagpur: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a detailed public notice outlining eligibility conditions for students appearing in Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations. The clarification stresses on the two-year course structure, mandatory attendance, and importance of internal assessment under the National Education Policy 2020.According to the board, Class 10 and Class 12 are two-year programmes covering Class 9 and Class 11, respectively. Students must study all subjects for two years to qualify for the final examination. A minimum of 75% attendance has been made compulsory, and internal assessments will continue as an integral part of evaluation. The board cautioned that absence from regular classes will prevent schools from conducting assessments, and such students will be placed in the "Essential Repeat" category, even if they are enrolled as regular students. The circular also clarified rules on additional subjects. Students of Class 10 may offer up to two extra subjects alongside five compulsory ones, while Class 12 students can take only one additional subject. However, these subjects too must be studied over two years. If a school has not obtained CBSE approval to offer a subject and lacks necessary teachers or laboratories, its students will not be permitted to opt for that subject either as a main or an additional option. For those who had taken additional subjects in previous years but were placed in "Compartment" or "Essential Repeat" categories, CBSE has allowed them to reappear as private candidates under the same category. The board underlined that students who do not meet the prescribed conditions will not be permitted to appear in additional subjects as private candidates. The notice aims to reinforce discipline and academic continuity across CBSE-affiliated institutions, while also ensuring that schools strictly adhere to subject approvals and internal assessment requirements.
