Nagpur: In a chilling act of cruelty, nine-year-old Darshan Palaskar was brutally strangled by his stepfather Akash Kanhekar to 'eliminate any future demand for share in property'. Kanhekar also believed killing Darshan will remove the son from his wife's first marriage, and help mend his strained relationship with her. The 35-year-old Kanhekar roped in his friend Gaurav Gaigole with a paltry Rs300 to assist in the heinous crime. The boy's lifeless body was discovered around 40km away from their house, dumped in a sack in a gully in the hilly jungle terrain near Akot city, after an intensive 10-hour overnight search by the Akot police. The search was led by senior inspector Amol Malwe under the supervision of assistant SP Anmol Mittal and SP Archit Chandak.The case began on July 2, when Kanhekar and his wife, Darshan's mother, walked into Akot City police station at around 8.30pm to report the boy missing. The mother claimed Darshan left home around 3pm and had not returned. His mobile phone was switched off at 3.21pm, raising immediate suspicion. The police, led by the station house officer (SHO), registered a case of kidnapping under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched a search operation.A breakthrough came via Akot city's recently inaugurated integrated CCTV Command Centre, where footage revealed Darshan walking alone at 3.05pm before being picked up on a motorcycle by two men. Shockingly, one of the men was identified as Kanhekar, the stepfather who had come to report the boy missing. When confronted, Kanhekar's wife revealed that he was her second husband. Darshan's father had died by suicide a few years earlier. This revelation shifted the investigation's focus.By 12.30am, the investigation officer had started interrogating Kanhekar. Under intense questioning, he confessed to strangling Darshan and disposing of his body in the hilly jungle near the Shahnur Wildlife Sanctuary, part of Melghat Tiger Reserve.Kanhekar's lack of cooperation and attempts to mislead the police delayed the recovery of the body, which was found only after a gruelling overnight search using mobile lights and torches. The boy's body, stuffed in a sack, was located in a riverine gully in rugged terrain.Simultaneously, a separate police team tracked down Gaigole, the second suspect spotted in the CCTV footage, to Anjangaon Surji tehsil in Amravati district. Gaigole was taken into custody and brought to Akot for questioning. The police, supported by the district's mobile forensic van, worked tirelessly through the night, combing the dense jungle to locate Darshan's remains.The police team completed 90% of the investigation within 12 hours under ASP Mittal and SP Chandak. All procedural requirements under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), including video recording of critical investigative processes, were meticulously followed. The police have prepared comprehensive documentation and aim to submit a watertight charge sheet within two days.The two accused were remanded to police custody till July 7 after being produced before the court on Thursday.
