Mizoram Governor completes self-enumeration as India begins first digital census

Aizawl: Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh successfully completed his self-enumeration for the general census at Lok Bhavan here on Tuesday, Lok Bhavan sources said. Singh hailed the country's first digital census as a "landmark initiative" for the nation. He urged all census officials in the state to make all-out efforts to ensure that no citizen is left behind. He also appealed to citizens to take the exercise seriously by registering themselves in the census and to extend full cooperation to the enumerators. The Governor instructed officials to reach even the remotest corners of the state, ensure the process remains as hassle-free as possible for citizens, and conduct the entire exercise in a clear, transparent, and doubt-free manner. Recognising the unique social fabric of the state, Singh called for a "strong collaboration" between census officials and Local or Village Councils, relying on the Mizo tradition of community support to ensure the fieldwork is executed smoothly. Senior officials from the Directorate of Census Operations briefed the Governor on census preparedness, strategies, and progress in the state during the self-enumeration. The 2027 Census, India's first digital census, is being rolled out in two strategic stages. The first phase -- Houselisting and Housing Census -- began on April 1, while the second phase, Population Enumeration, is scheduled for February next year. According to officials, the self-enumeration window is open from April 1 to April 15, 2026. This will be followed by the House Listing and Housing Census across Mizoram from April 16 to May 15, they said.
