Chandigarh/Delhi, Apr 7 (PTI) Active Western Disturbances again triggered light to moderate rainfall in parts of north and northwestern India on Tuesday, with day temperatures registering a drop in many places while causing landslides and avalanches in some districts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Chandigarh, the common capital of Punjab and Haryana, received light showers during the day. It recorded a maximum temperature of 27.6 degrees Celsius, over five notches below normal limits, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Ambala, Panchkula, Narnaul, Rohtak in Haryana and Amritsar, Rupnagar, Mohali, Patiala, Pathankot and Ludhiana in Punjab were also among the places that received rain in the two neighbouring states. Ludhiana recorded a high of 24.2 degrees Celsius, nine notches below normal, while Patiala recorded a high of 26.1 degrees, seven degrees lower than normal. Pathankot recorded a high of 23.5 degrees Celsius, while Hoshiarpur recorded a maximum of 23.9 degrees Celsius. Mercury settled at 25.4 degrees Celsius in Haryana's Hisar -- 10 notches below normal -- while Ambala recorded a high of 26.8 degrees Celsius, seven degrees below normal. Karnal recorded a high of 25.5 degrees Celsius, staying more than eight degrees below the normal limit. Delhi, which has received multiple showers in the past two weeks, received another spell of rain, bringing much-needed relief from the steadily rising temperatures. The change in weather was due to shifting wind patterns along with the influence of a western disturbance, which is expected to keep skies partly to generally cloudy with the possibility of light rain over the national capital region on Wednesday as well. The IMD had issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and rain for Tuesday and Wednesday. A yellow alert requires citizens to be aware and prepare for moderate to severe weather conditions that could cause disruption. Between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm on Tuesday, Safdarjung recorded 1.8 mm of rainfall, while Lodhi Road also received 1.8 mm. Ayanagar logged 1.6 mm, followed by Palam at 1.2 mm. Pitampura, Pusa, Mayur Vihar and Janakpuri each recorded 1.0 mm, while Ridge reported 0.3 mm. The minimum temperatures were recorded at 20.1 degrees Celsius, 0.1 degrees above normal, in Safdarjung. The northwestern state of Rajasthan, too, recorded rainfall, with Jodhpur receiving the most at 42.2 mm. Resultantly, temperatures across the state also remained below normal. The highest maximum temperature on Monday was 36.4 degrees Celsius in Chittorgarh, while the lowest minimum temperature was 16.7 degrees Celsius in Nagaur, according to the weather office here. In Uttar Pradesh, rain accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms lashed Lucknow and several parts of Uttar Pradesh, with the state capital witnessing cloudy skies, lightning and light showers. Cloud cover developed over Lucknow in the evening, followed by strong winds and light rain, bringing relief from the day's heat. Similar weather conditions prevailed across large parts of the state, the IMD said. According to the weather department, light rainfall was recorded in many districts, stretching from Saharanpur in western Uttar Pradesh to Sonbhadra in the east and Agra in the south. Meanwhile, heavy rains triggered cold wave-like conditions in the Jammu region, with day temperatures plunging up to 7.2 degrees Celsius below normal. Additionally, landslides forced the closure of the strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district. The IMD said that an active western disturbance has impacted the region for 36 hours, bringing widespread rainfall, a sharp fall in temperatures and disruption to normal life. Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of 23.2 degrees Celsius, which is 7.2 degrees below normal, marking a significant dip under persistent cloudy and rainy conditions, as per the IMD. Similar trends were recorded across the region, including Katra at 20.5 degrees Celsius (6.7 degrees below normal) and Banihal at 17.1 degrees Celsius (3.2 degrees below normal), it said. The rainfall activity remained pronounced across the Jammu division, with Katra recording the highest precipitation of 7.8 mm between 0830 and 1730 hours, followed by Jammu at 5.8 mm, Bhaderwah at 3.0 mm and Batote at 2.4 mm. The highway linking Kashmir with the rest of the country was closed after multiple landslides hit stretches between Digdol and Khooni Nallah in Ramban district. "Traffic movement has been stopped in both directions -- from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice versa -- due to a heavy landslide. The road is completely blocked," a traffic police spokesperson said. In the Kashmir division of the Union territory, authorities issued a medium danger avalanche warning for the higher reaches of Ganderbal and Kuwpara districts in view of a fresh wet spell in the valley. "Avalanche with medium danger level is likely to occur above 2600 metres over Ganderbal and Kupwara in the next 24 hours," an official of the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority said here. Similarly, in Himachal Pradesh, heavy rains in the last 24 hours disrupted life in the upper reaches of the state, with a massive landslide on the border of Chamba and Lahaul and Spiti districts. Consequently, the Pangi valley in Chamba got cut off from the rest of the state after a 60-metre stretch of the Sansari-Kullu-Manali road in the district was wiped out.
