Kolkata weather: The 'City of Joy' is likely to witness rainfall and thunderstorms today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said in its latest weather bulletin. The IMD has also warned of a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds in Kolkata till April 9. Kolkata is likely to witness thunderstorms with rainfall today, April 5, 2026 in a big relief from scorching heat in the 'City of Joy'. According to the IMD forecast, Kolkata continued to be scorched on Saturday, with the maximum temperature hitting 36.1°C, the highest of this season. The Met office has predicted cloudy days ahead, with chances of thunderstorms striking the city over the next five days. Conditions are set to turn favourable for thunderstorm activity after a scorching spell, said the Regional Meteorological Centre on Saturday. On April 6, the city will see a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms. The minimum temperature is likely to be around 24°C, while the maximum may touch 34°C. Thunderstorms may be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph. The weather is expected to intensify on April 7, with rain and thundershowers likely across the city. Temperatures will hover between 23°C and 33°C. Strong thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph may impact normal life. On April 8, Kolkata will continue to experience rain and thundershowers, keeping temperatures lower between 22°C and 31°C. Lightning strikes and strong winds of 40-50 kmph remain a concern. Similar conditions will persist on April 9, with thunderstorms and rain expected throughout the day. The minimum and maximum temperatures will stay around 22°C and 31°C, respectively, along with lightning and gusty winds up to 50 kmph. By April 10, weather conditions may slightly improve, with a partly cloudy sky and chances of thunderstorm development. Temperatures are expected to range between 25°C and 33°C, and no major weather warning has been issued for the day. Kolkata residents should prepare for a stormy week with frequent rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds, especially between April 7 and April 9. "We could see a slow drop in temperature as a cloud cover starts appearing from Sunday. It could lead to sporadic rain in and around Kolkata. This will be due to localised conditions -- clouds triggered by heating and moisture incursion, which is a common phenomenon in summer. But chances of more severe thunderstorms will increase over the subsequent three days," Sourish Bandyopadhyay, weather scientist at RMC, told Times of India. "We expect a trough and a cyclonic circulation to form near Bengal that will lead to clouds and thunderstorms. There will also be an indirect impact of a western disturbance.
