Siliguri, Apr 4 (UNI) Mofakkerul Islam, a key accused arrested in connection with the confinement of seven judicial officers in Malda district, has been remanded to 14 days of police custody, while his associate Ekramul has been sent to police custody for several days, a source said on Friday. Police have begun interrogating both in connection with Wednesday's unrest at Mothabari in Malda district. The duo was intercepted by the CID and Siliguri police on Friday and later handed over to Malda police, who arrested them on charges of being key instigators behind the violence in Mothabari and Kaliachak. Islam was booked after Kaliachak police station registered a case -- Kaliachak P.S. Case No. 462/2026 dated April 2 -- under Sections 126(2), 221, 189(1), 49, 61(2) and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 18 of the West Bengal Highway Act. Meanwhile, officials of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), who arrived in Mothabari on Friday, continued their probe on Saturday, visiting multiple locations linked to the incident. The team began its investigation at the Kaliachak-II Block Development Office (BDO) and later inspected the Mothabari police station. In the afternoon, NIA officials also visited the office of the Superintendent of Police as part of the ongoing inquiry. Earlier in the day, around 10:30 a.m., the NIA team reached the Kaliachak-II BDO office in Mothabari and went straight inside upon arrival. Sources said the officials resumed their investigation into the protest and unrest that erupted on Wednesday night. Tension had escalated in Mothabari on Wednesday following protests over the alleged deletion of names from the electoral rolls. Aggrieved voters staged a day-long road blockade, demanding restoration of their voting rights. The agitation intensified late at night when protesters gheraoed the BDO office for several hours. During the unrest, seven judicial officers were confined within the premises, causing significant disruption. Police later intervened and safely rescued them amid heightened tension. In the aftermath of the incident, the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to initiate a probe either through the CBI or the NIA. Acting on the directive, the Election Commission handed over the investigation to the NIA, whose officials reached Mothabari on Friday afternoon to begin their inquiry.
