Ongole: In a matter of pride for Prakasam district, Gundamala Gram Panchayat of Kothapatanam mandal has been selected for the prestigious Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Panchayat Satatva Vikas Puraskar, a national-level award conferred by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj for outstanding local governance. The panchayat, home to approximately 2092 residents across 824 households, is a coastal fishing community surrounded by mangrove forests. It has been recognised under the 'Self-Sufficient Infrastructure Panchayat' theme for delivering comprehensive, service-oriented infrastructure to its residents. The District Panchayat Officer, M Venkateswara Rao, explained that the panchayat has established a Swarna Gramam Centre, Rythu Seva Kendra, and a health clinic, ensuring doorstep delivery of essential services. It has also achieved 100 per cent house construction under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Key infrastructure developed includes a cyclone shelter, community hall, sanitary complex, internal roads, fish drying platforms, Gokulum sheds, and a structured solid waste collection system. Despite challenges such as frequent cyclones damaging infrastructure and limited financial resources, the panchayat has pursued participatory planning through gram sabhas and awareness programmes. Sanitation monitoring through IVRS and a Solid Waste Processing Centre further strengthens its governance model. Benefiting from central schemes including PM Matsya Sampada Yojana and PM Matsya Kisan Samman Nidhi, Gundamala stands as a model self-reliant coastal village for the state. New Delhi: The Centre has asked the states and union territories to make any proposed changes in the boundaries of administrative jurisdictions before December 31, 2025, when they will freeze for the Census-2027 exercise and the first phase of the decadal population count will begin on April 1 next year, according to a communication sent by the registrar general and census commissioner of India, Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, on June 27.
