New Delhi, Dec 16 (UNI) Delhi Traffic Police announced that traffic challans will soon be payable through the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) across all BBPS-enabled Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platforms, an official said on Tuesday. The move is aimed at promoting cashless transactions, ensuring transparency, and streamlining traffic enforcement mechanisms in the city, police said. According to a senior officer at Traffic Headquarters, the new system will allow commuters to pay their traffic challans seamlessly using any major UPI application integrated with BBPS. "This initiative is expected to simplify the payment process, reduce dependency on physical modes of payment, and encourage timely compliance by motorists, thereby improving overall enforcement efficiency," he added. In this connection, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Delhi Traffic Police and the State Bank of India (SBI). The agreement was formalized by Satya Vir Katara, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic Headquarters, on behalf of Delhi Traffic Police. The officer said that after completion of the required documentation and procedural formalities, technical integration with the BBPS platform will be initiated in the coming days. Once the system becomes operational, vehicle owners will be able to pay traffic challans through any BBPS-enabled UPI app, ensuring faster settlements and real-time confirmation of payments. A senior traffic officer noted that the move is likely to increase the volume of daily challan payments while also minimizing delays and disputes related to outstanding fines. The BBPS-based payment mechanism is also expected to enhance transparency and accountability by creating a standardized and secure digital payment channel. "By integrating traffic challan payments with a nationally recognized bill payment ecosystem, Delhi Traffic Police aims to reduce manual intervention and improve the accuracy of financial transactions," the officer said. Officials said the initiative is in line with the Government of India's Digital India vision and reflects Delhi Traffic Police's ongoing efforts to modernize traffic management through technology-driven solutions.
