NEW DELHI: Recognizing the potential and challenges of AI, the Government of India constituted an advisory group, chaired by Principal Scientific Advisor Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, to undertake the development of an 'AI for India-Specific Regulatory Framework'. Under the guidance of the Advisory Group, a sub-committee on 'AI Governance and Guidelines Development' will provide actionable recommendations for AI governance in India. The sub-committee's report on AI Governance, now published for public consultation, aims to guide the development of a trustworthy and accountable AI ecosystem in India. India's diverse demographic and socio-economic landscape offers immense opportunities for AI-driven growth, but it also necessitates robust governance mechanisms to ensure inclusive progress and mitigate associated risks, the government said. IndiaAI is a nodal platform for building a comprehensive ecosystem that fosters AI innovation by democratizing computing access, enhancing data quality, developing indigenous AI capabilities, attracting top AI talent, enabling industry collaboration, providing startup risk capital, ensuring socially impactful AI projects, and promoting ethical AI. To address various challenges in the process, a multi-stakeholder Advisory Group, chaired by the Principal Scientific Advisor of India and comprising representatives from relevant ministries, has been constituted to develop an 'AI for India-Specific Regulatory Framework.' Under the Advisory Group's guidance, a Subcommittee on 'AI Governance and Guidelines Development' was formed to provide actionable recommendations for AI governance in India. The Subcommittee examined key governance issues, conducted a gap analysis of existing frameworks, and proposed a comprehensive approach to ensure the trustworthiness and accountability of AI systems. The sub-committee's report highlights the importance of a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to enforce compliance and ensure effective governance as India's AI ecosystem evolves. Its recommendations, based on extensive deliberations and a review of the current legal and regulatory context, aim to foster AI-driven innovation while safeguarding public interests. Public Consultation on Sub-committee Recommendations The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has published the sub-committee's report for public consultation to ensure that the governance mechanisms reflect India's aspirations. This public consultation aims to facilitate the creation of a robust, inclusive, and adaptive framework for technological advancements, the government said.
