New Delhi: Following a directive from the Delhi Police Commissioner to strictly enforce number plate regulations, the traffic police have launched a widespread crackdown on vehicles with improperly displayed or decorative number plates. As of May 2025, more than 27,000 drivers have been booked for violations.The enforcement drive targets non-standard number plates that use unusual fonts, colours, religious symbols, or caste and community slogans. According to official data, there were 17,795 violations recorded in 2024, including 14,624 challans and 3,171 notices. In comparison, the numbers have surged this year, with 23,417 challans and 3,785 notices issued so far -- bringing the total to 27,202 cases in May 2025 alone.Police said criminals often exploit this loophole to evade detection and prosecution. With non-standard number plates, they can easily disguise their vehicle's identity, making it harder for authorities to track their movements. This enables them to carry out illicit activities, such as theft, smuggling, or even more serious crimes like terrorism, without fear of being easily identified."Non-standard number plates, including those that are defective, fancy, or illegible, pose a significant challenge to law and order in our cities. There have been several cases where criminals try to hide their number plates by applying soil or thick paint to evade cameras," police said.Moreover, defective number plates can also hinder the effectiveness of traffic surveillance systems .A senior traffic official said our teams keep a check on vehicles that are flouting rules.
