Pune: The Uttamnagar police have recorded statements of cadets and instructors present at the swimming pool when a first-term National Defence Academy (NDA) cadet, Aditya D Yadav, drowned during a training session on the Khadakwasla campus around 5pm on Thursday.Inspector Rahul Khandare of Uttamnagar police station said preliminary findings suggested no immediate sign of negligence on the part of the instructors. "Going by the details of the recorded statements, we don't see the instructors' negligence at this juncture. Our investigation are on to find out if there was some deviation from the set training protocol," Khandare said.Yadav, hailing from a village in Nalanda district of Bihar, was participating in a session for weak swimmers when the incident occurred. This was the second NDA cadet's death in the last fortnight, although the circumstances were different.Sub-inspector Atul Shirsagar, who conducted the spot panchanama, said, "After jumping into the pool, the cadet swam for a few metres but could not reach the other end. When the standby instructors found him motionless, lifeguards jumped into the pool and brought him out. This version has been confirmed by other cadets at the scene."The official statement of the NDA said, "During the practice, cadets were swimming across the width of the pool. When instructors noticed Yadav lying motionless on the surface, two lifeguards immediately dove in and pulled him out." Immediate first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), was administered by the academy's medical team. The cadet was then rushed to the Military Hospital, Khadakwasla, where he was declared dead. His parents were expected to arrive at the academy on Friday evening to receive the body. The NDA has initiated an internal inquiry to determine the circumstances leading to the tragedy. "The NDA extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family. The civil police and next of kin have been informed," the statement said.The swimming practice session was a part of the NDA's structured physical training schedule, designed to help cadets build endurance and water confidence under controlled conditions. Such sessions are routinely supervised by qualified instructors and safety personnel, with medical staff on standby, said an official."Upon reporting to the academy, every cadet undergoes a swimming test and is categorised as a non-swimmer, a weak swimmer or a swimmer. Accordingly, the academy trains each cadet. This rule is applicable to other drills also. The swimming test is mandatory and hence it is conducted in a sincere and focused manner," multiple instructors who served in the NDA in the past told TOI.While rare, training-related mishaps at military academies often trigger comprehensive internal investigations to ensure that safety protocols were reviewed and reinforced, they said. Officials familiar with the process said the inquiry would likely examine the cadet's medical history, the conduct of the training session and the timeline of the rescue efforts."The first-term cadets, typically the youngest batch at the academy, undergo basic military orientation and foundational fitness programmes, including swimming, obstacle training and field exercises," an officer in the NDA said.Another senior officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the academy maintained strict safety standards during all physical training activities. "Every cadet's well-being is paramount. We will leave no stone unturned in investigating what went wrong," the officer said.The mortal remains of Cadet Yadav were expected to be handed over to his family after the completion of formalities and post-mortem examination. The NDA has assured full support to the bereaved family in this hour of grief, said the officials.
