New Delhi: A six-year-old girl drowned in stagnant water on a vacant plot near her house in north-west Delhi's Prem Nagar on Thursday. A call about a missing child went to Prem Nagar police station around 6pm. The caller reported that Priyanshi (6) was missing in Rama Vihar. A police team during its search found the girl floating in the stagnant rainwater. "The child was playing outside her house after which she went missing. During the search, she was found floating in the flooded plot close to her home," a senior police officer said. She was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri, where doctors declared her brought dead. Police said the area had multiple vacant plots and was severely waterlogged. The girl could have accidentally slipped and fallen into the water while playing outside. Her body was later shifted to the hospital's mortuary. Barkha (28), Priyanshi's mother, told TOI, "She would usually go out to play around the same time every evening, so we weren't worried at first. I even looked out from the balcony and she said she'd be back soon. But when hours passed and she didn't return, we started searching for her. Someone suggested we check the nearby plots. That's where we found her." Priyanshi studied in Class 1 in a govt school in Mangolpuri and lived with her father, who works in a shoe making factory, and her mother, who is a homemaker, and three siblings. Police have registered a case. The girl's body will be handed over to her family after a post-mortem. Police are awaiting the autopsy report for further action.
