Noida: After four consecutive days of very poor air quality, Noida saw a marked improvement due to sustained northwesterly winds, clocking up to 10 to 15 kilometre per hour (kmph) speed, that helped disperse pollutants lingering in the airshed since Diwali. On Thursday, AQI improved from 330 (very poor) the previous day to 282 (poor). The city's air quality index had worsened pre-Diwali as wind speed slowed and temperature dipped on Oct 19. On Diwali, a thick layer of haze blanketed the city -- AQI touched 325 (very poor) -- as people burst crackers much beyond the two-hour evening window set by Supreme Court. Sector 116 station, which records data for the 7x sectors recorded the worst particulate matter concentrations, with PM2.5 and 10 concentrations peaking to 457 µg/m3 and 500 µg/m3, respectively at 2am on Tuesday. A thick layer of toxic haze was recorded over the next two days -- 320 on Tuesday and 330 on Wednesday.On Thursday at 4pm, the Sector 116 station recorded an average AQI of 283, while Sector 62, covering institutional and residential areas along the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, registered 282 -- both falling in the poor category. Along the Noida Expressway, Sector 125 station recorded 281, and older sectors monitored by the Sector 1 station showed an AQI of 280.After seven consecutive very poor days, Ghaziabad recorded a significant improvement, with the AQI dropping to 252. Greater Noida, which had logged the season's first very poor AQI of 308 on Wednesday, also saw a notable improvement at 280. Stationwise, Greater Noida's Knowledge Park V recorded an average AQI of 281 and Knowledge Park III recorded 292. In comparison, Ghaziabad's Loni recorded the worst AQI at 299, followed by Indirapuram (263), Sanjay Nagar (253) and Vasundhara (205), all in poor category.Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) attributed the improvement to northwesterly winds that blew at 10-15 kmph in the afternoon, dropping to 8 kmph by night. For Friday, winds are expected from the northwest at 5 kmph in the morning, strengthening to 10 kmph from the north in the afternoon, and easing below 8 kmph by evening.Meanwhile in Delhi, the air quality was stuck in the 'very poor' category for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday. There's little respite in sight with AQI predicted to remain in this range till at least Oct 26. "The winds have been dropping during the past few nights, leading to pollutants being trapped. Westerly winds start blowing at 10 to 12 kmph from noon, gradually dispersing the pollutants. With this cycling set to repeat in the next few days, no significant change in air quality is expected," said Mahesh Palawat, vice-president, Skymet Meteorology.
