Bengaluru: With the three-day Deepavali drawing to a close Wednesday night, the skies flashed the biggest -- and the cleanest -- smile with Karnataka State Pollution Control Board confirming remarkable improvement in air quality levels in Bengaluru and several other cities compared with the previous year for the like period.The three-day average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Bengaluru this year stood at 83, a significant drop from 120 in 2024, marking a 44% improvement. Statewide, the average AQI fell 29% compared to the 2024 festive period, making this one of Karnataka's cleanest Deepavalis in recent times.Across 28 monitored towns, Karnataka's average AQI during Deepavali dropped from 73 in 2024 to 56 this year. Southern districts such as Mysuru, Ramanagara, and Davanagere witnessed sharp declines in AQI (up to 120% improvement), while northern districts like Bidar and Belagavi still showed localised increases due to cracker activity and stagnant air.KSPCB officials credited a fall in firecracker usage, favourable weather, and growing citizen awareness for the big improvement. "People are beginning to realise that cleaner celebrations don't dim the spirit of the festival. The shift in public behaviour, especially in urban centres, has clearly reflected in the data," said PM Narendra Swamy, chairman, KSPCB.CAAQMS data (a marker of ambient air quality) accessed by TOI showed most Bengaluru zones remained within 'moderate' AQI levels during the Oct 20-22 festival. Industrial clusters such as Peenya (145) and Kasturinagar (141) saw the highest spikes, while institutional areas like Nimhans (32) and Jayanagar (60) recorded the cleanest air.Interestingly, the city's overall AQI improved by 5% compared to the pre-Deepavali baseline of Oct 13, 2025 -- an uncommon post-festival outcome. Swamy added: "Favourable wind patterns and rainfall before the festival helped disperse pollutants." The rain might have acted as a spoilsport, but it has aided in improving the air quality.

New Delhi/Noida, Jun 27 (PTI) End-of-life vehicles detected at fuel stations or found parked at public places will be impounded and a penalty of Rs 10,000 imposed on four-wheeler owners and Rs 5,000 on two-wheeler owners starting July 1, officials said on Friday.
