Gurgaon: For a brief moment on Thursday, city residents could breathe a little easier. The city's average air quality index (AQI) dropped to 208, down from 281 the previous day, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).The improvement, however, is only a temporary reprieve. The air will remain in the 'poor' category -- still dangerous for children, the elderly, and anyone with respiratory issues.Officials said the short-lived relief was due to stronger surface winds and clearer skies, which helped disperse some of the lingering pollutants. However, meteorologists warned that this window would close quickly. By the weekend, wind speeds are expected to fall, slowing the natural cleansing of the atmosphere and allowing pollution to build up once again.Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and decision support system (DSS) for air quality management in Delhi predicted mainly clear skies, but with persistent morning and evening haze. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover around 31 to 33 degrees Celsius, with nights remaining slightly warmer than usual. The wind, which has shifted from northwest to northeast, is likely to blow at 10-15kmph in the afternoon, but would weaken later in the evening.The mixing height -- the layer of air where pollutants can disperse -- is also expected to shrink from 2,650 metres on Thursday to just 1,800 metres by Oct 26. The ventilation index, a key measure of how well the air can mix vertically, is also set to drop sharply from 14,500 to as low as 5,000-7,400 sqm per second. When this index falls below 6,000 with low wind speeds, conditions become especially poor for the dispersal of pollutants.On the ground, this means the current improvement is unlikely to last. Both DSS and IMD projections indicate that air quality across Delhi-NCR could slip into the 'very poor' category between Friday and Sunday. Residents should expect pollution levels to swing between 'poor' and 'very poor' over the next few days."The brief improvement is meteorological, not structural. Unless Gurgaon tackles its local emission sources -- dust from construction, vehicular exhaust, and open waste burning -- AQI will keep bouncing up and down until stronger winter winds arrive," said Shubhansh Tiwari, a research associate at the Centre for Science and Environment.Earlier this week, the city's AQI soared to 370, one of the highest post-Diwali readings in recent years.The spike, doctors said, has immediate and serious health consequences. "The days around Diwali are very hard for people who already have asthma, COPD, bronchitis, or are recovering from lung infections," said Dr Arun Chowdary Kotaru, senior consultant for respiratory diseases and sleep medicine at Artemis Hospital. "Fireworks release tiny particles, sulphur dioxide, and heavy metals that can stay in the air for days. They irritate your airways, cause coughing, wheezing, and tightness of the chest. They often trigger flare-ups in patients who are otherwise stable."Dr Kotaru added that many patients struggle to sleep at night because pollution tends to worsen when temperatures drop and the air becomes still. "The smoke also reduces oxygen levels, making breathing harder for those with weak lungs. Children, older people, and heart patients feel breathless faster. These are not minor effects -- polluted celebrations come at a real health cost."Doctors recommend that people wear N95 masks outdoors, use air purifiers indoors, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity until air quality improves.
