Gurgaon: Farm fires have not peaked, yet cities in Haryana were India's main pollution hotspot over the last seven days, according to an analysis by Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).Between Oct 13 and 21, multiple Haryana cities, including Jind, Gurgaon, Dharuhera, Bahadurgarh, Rohtak and Narnaul repeatedly featured in India's most polluted top 10, which is based on data compiled by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).Pollution levels peaked Oct 21, the day after Diwali, when Jind recorded a PM2.5 concentration of 412 µg/m³ (micrograms per cubic metre), the highest in India for that day. Gurgaon, at 290 µg/m³, was in the third spot nationally. Dharuhera (298 µg/m³), Narnaul (266 µg/m³), Bahadurgarh (247 µg/m³) and Rohtak (223 µg/m³) were the other cities in the top 10.Gurgaon, already struggling with construction dust and vehicular emissions, saw a sharp jump during the week, going from 102 µg/m³ on Oct 15 to 184 µg/m³ on Oct 20, before spiking to 290 µg/m³ on Oct 21 after widespread bursting of firecrackers during the festival. Air quality monitors in the city also saw a surge in PM2.5 levels on Diwali night, reaching up to 949 µg/m³ in Sector 51 (the national safe standard is 60 µg/m³).Manoj Kumar, who tracks regional air quality trends at CREA, said the figures reflect a sharp seasonal escalation linked to Diwali emissions, met factors and stubble burning. "Haryana's numbers show that the pollution load is no longer restricted to Delhi-NCR alone. Industrial and peri-urban clusters such as Dharuhera, Ballabhgarh and Bahadurgarh have become consistent high-emission zones," he said."Despite this, the state currently has only one city included under NCAP (National Clean Air Programme). It is time to revise the NCAP non-attainment list, which is based on decade-old data, so that more cities in Haryana can be included and receive targeted pollution mitigation," he said.In the first half of the monitoring period, cities from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh featured among the top 10. But by Oct 17, Haryana was dominating the list entirely.Other cities that appeared regularly in the top 10 over the week were Ghaziabad (all seven days, and India's most polluted city on four of these days) and Noida (also all seven days), underlining once again the need for a comprehensive pollution action plan that brings Delhi, Haryana and UP govts on the same table and work out a unified strategy.
