Panchkula: Two days after Diwali, the city continues to grapple with poor air quality. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the 24-hour average AQI recorded at 4 pm on Wednesday stood at 268, firmly placing Panchkula in the "poor" category -- a level known to cause breathing discomfort on prolonged exposure.By 5 pm, the AQI had climbed slightly to 271, still within the poor range (AQI 201-300). The city's only monitoring station, located in Sector 6, has consistently reflected deteriorated air conditions since Diwali night.Despite official restrictions limiting firecracker use to 8-10 pm on both Monday and Tuesday, violations were rampant. Crackers were heard as early as 7 pm and continued until 1 am, causing distress to elderly residents, children, and pets, and contributing to both air and noise pollution.The pollution spike has lingered, with air quality yet to return to moderate (AQI 101-200) or satisfactory (AQI 51-100) levels. Experts suggest it may take several days for the air to clear, depending on weather conditions and pollutant dispersion.
