Coimbatore: The recent showers have filled waterbodies in the Noyyal river system to the brim with the water overflowing from the Chithirai Chavadi check dam.An official from the water resources department said, "At present, the inflow to the check dam is around 750 cusecs. Except for Perur Periyakulam and the small tank in Kuniyamuthur, all other lakes dependent on the Noyyal are at full capacity. We are now diverting water to these two lakes." R Manikandan, organizer of Kovai Kulangal Padhukaapu Amaippu, said the outlet shutters of Senkulam tank and Perur Periyakulam are damaged and must be repaired immediately. "The outlet of Vellalore tank has been encroached upon. It should be cleared before the heavy spell," he said. The Bhavanisagar and Sholayar dams have recorded increased inflow due to rain in their catchment areas. The water level in Siruvani reservoir stood at 38 feet, and in the Pillur dam at 87 feet on Wednesday. The district is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall till Oct 26, according to NK Sathyamoorthy, professor and head of the Agro Climate Research Centre at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University."We expect an average of 20mm to 30mm of rainfall across the district," he said. Meanwhile, Valparai and Pollachi experienced moderate rainfall during the 24-hour ending at 7.30am on Wednesday. The district recorded a total of 261mm of rainfall, with an average of 11.35mm. According to data from the District Disaster Management Authority, the PWD office at Makkinampatti near Pollachi received the highest rainfall at 31mm, followed by Chinnakalar and the Pollachi Taluk office (27mm each), Valparai PAP (26mm), Anaimalai Taluk (18mm), Aliyar (15.8mm), and Sholayar (14mm).
