'Severe' goes air quality aftercity enjoys crackling Diwali | Lucknow News - The Times of India

12 Lucknow: The bursting of firecrackers during Diwali celebrations engulfed Lucknow in toxic air. During the live monitoring of air pollution levels, the PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations in the city's air reached the hazardous level of 500 micrograms per cubic meter. The city's air quality deteriorated from 'moderate' to 'severe' during Diwali night and post-Diwali celebrations on Tuesday. According to the live air quality monitoring stations' data available on the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) website, the hazardous fine particulate matter crossed the dangerous 500 mark in five out of six localities monitored on Diwali night and the next day.Not only did the air pollution levels spike at a particular hour during cracker bursting on Diwali night at different locations in the city, but also the Air Quality Index (AQI), which is the 24-hour average concentration of pollutants, witnessed a surge. As per the CPCB AQI report, Lucknow's AQI was 144 till 4 pm on Monday (Diwali day), which jumped to 250 after the bursting of crackers on Tuesday. Hence, the air quality of the city shifted from 'moderate' to 'poor'. According to environmentalists, the main reason behind the severe air quality was the bursting of firecrackers, followed by vehicular pollution and poor wind speed, which prevented the dispersion of the pollutants. As per the live air quality monitoring stations at Lalbagh, Kendriya Vidyalaya Aliganj, Lalbagh, and Talkatora of CPCB, and three monitoring stations at Gomtinagar, Kukrail picnic spot 1, and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University maintained by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, the concentration of PM 10 was five times higher than the permissible limit of 100, while PM 2.5 was seven times higher than the permissible limit of 60 micrograms per cubic meter of air. On Diwali night (till 12 am), the maximum PM 2.5 levels were recorded in Talkatora (500), followed by Gomtinagar (434) and Kendriya Vidyalaya Aliganj (406), all falling in the severe category, which means exposure to such air impacts healthy people and seriously affects those with existing diseases. Meanwhile, maximum PM 2.5 levels of 361 micrograms were recorded in Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University campus and 313 micrograms at Lalbagh, which is a very poor air category; exposure to such air causes respiratory illness on prolonged exposure. It was only in Kukrail where the air pollution levels were low, with PM 2.5 concentration recorded at 191 micrograms, a moderate air quality category that causes minor discomfort. Post-Diwali celebrations on Tuesday, the air turned more toxic with PM 2.5 levels recorded at 500 in Lalbagh, Gomtinagar, Kendriya Vidyalaya Aliganj, Kukrail Picnic Spot, and Talkatora each. Meanwhile, PM 10 also touched the 500 mark in Kendriya Vidyalaya Aliganj, Kukrail picnic spot, Talkatora, and Gomtinagar."The most effective way to reduce air pollution is to not burst any firecrackers at all. Also, people fond of bursting crackers should choose green crackers that have less harmful raw materials and additives," said environmentalist Prof Venkatesh Datta.
