Noida: With the ban on firecrackers lifted for the first time in five years, Delhi-NCR experienced a sharp surge in pollution levels this Diwali, with both Noida and Ghaziabad recording 'very poor' air quality. This was also the worst Diwali AQI to be recorded in the two cities in the last three years, even though pollution levels didn't worsen after the festival.Experts said moderate winds of around 10 km per hour and warmer afternoons -- maximum temperature was recorded around 33 degrees Celsius -- aided dispersion, which is why air quality in Noida improved from 342 at 9am on Monday to 341 at noon, 328 at 3pm, 316 at 6pm and 310 at 9pm. In Ghaziabad, it was 323 at 9am on Monday, 319 at noon, 315 at 3pm, 312 at 6pm and 311 at 9pm. But as the intensity of bursting firecrackers increased around 8pm, and continued past midnight in most places in both the UP cities, the AQI began to deteriorate.A preliminary analysis of the data from Noida and Ghaziabad indicates that from 9pm on Monday to 9am the following morning, pollution levels rose steadily, oscillating between 310 and 326. But the average AQI in both cities improved marginally post Diwali.Experts also noted that long-range pollutants, like smoke from crop-residue burning, had limited impact on the region's airshed this year. "At present, NCR cities are experiencing easterly winds, which means there is no contribution from stubble burning to local air pollution. The wind speed has also improved lately, aiding the dispersion of pollutants. The mixing height, which is the vertical extent of the atmosphere near the ground where pollutants get mixed, was around 2,700 metres on Tuesday, which is favourable," Mahesh Palawat, vice president (meteorology and climate change) at Skymet Weather, said.AQI, he said, was likely to remain in the 'very poor' category until Oct 26, after which stronger winds may further improve air quality.The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) data showed that on Diwali, surface winds came predominantly from the southeast at 5-10 kmph in the afternoon, dropping below 8 kmph in the evening and night. Post-Diwali, surface winds blew from the northeast and reached up to 8 kmph.Weather analysts also pointed out that pollution levels this year were already high before Diwali and showed little variation after the festival. Noida recorded an average 24-hour AQI of 329 a day before Diwali this year, 325 on Diwali, and 320 on Tuesday, all in the 'very poor' category. This was worse than last year's 230, 257, and 274, respectively, and much higher than 2023, when the city recorded AQIs at 156, 189, and 363, and 2022, when it stood at 226, 305, and 299.Ghaziabad, meanwhile, recorded an average AQI of 333, 316, and 323 this year, compared to 237, 273, and 306 in 2024, and 160, 186, and 329 in 2023, respectively. Greater Noida's AQI recorded 278, 282, and 282 on the three days, compared to 274, 221, and 253 last year.Delhi's average AQI was 345 on Diwali and 351 on Tuesday. UPPCB officials attributed the stagnation to low wind velocity throughout the Diwali week, which prevented pollutants from dispersing. "The wind speed has been slow for the past week, contributing to deterioration in air quality. Heavy traffic and high footfall during the festive week also added to pollution," UPPCB regional officer (Noida) Reetesh Tiwari said.Meanwhile, Gurgaon woke up to a thick haze on Tuesday as AQI jumped to 370, getting into the 'very poor' zone for the first time this season and snapping a three-year streak of relatively cleaner post-Diwali air. During Diwali celebrations Monday, the city's AQI was already in the 'poor' category at 296. However, while firecrackers were burst without a break well beyond midnight, it's meteorological factors that came to the rescue to prevent a much sharper surge in the air quality index, especially after the concentration of PM2.5 - the finer and more dangerous pollutant - reached hazardous levels at three of the city's air monitoring stations after 10pm on Diwali night.
