India is building more and more data centres -- huge buildings full of computers that store our photos, videos, games, apps, and everything else we do online. Every time you use UPI, watch a YouTube video, or chat online, data from your phone travels through one of these centres. But here's the catch: data centres need a lot of power and a lot of water to keep all those computers cool. Imagine your phone heating up after gaming for too long -- now imagine millions of such machines running non-stop! To stop them from overheating, they're cooled using clean, drinkable water. That's becoming a big problem. In countries like the US, people are protesting new data centres because they use up so much water that nearby towns face shortages. India's data centre market is still smaller, but it's growing fast. Companies like Google are investing billions of dollars to build more of them. This means that by 2030, these centres might use more than twice as much water as they do now. And since many Indian cities already struggle to supply enough water to homes, there could be tough choices ahead -- will the people or the data stay thirsty? To fix this, India must urgently improve its water systems and find smarter cooling methods, like using recycled water. Data centres are important for keeping our country's information safe, but they shouldn't come at the cost of something as basic as water.
