Kolkata: The air quality of the city on Diwali day, which started off as 'satisfactory' at almost all the 14 monitoring stations in the morning, worsened drastically to 'poor' and 'very poor' by 9 pm owing to relentless bursting of fireworks. Though there were some "exceptional" areas, like College Street, which maintained relatively clean air, most of the city experienced hazardous conditions, underscoring the need for cleaner celebration practices and stronger pollution control measures. The worst air quality recorded was at the Sarojini Naidu College station in Dum Dum, where the AQI surged to 352 ('very poor') at 1 am on Tuesday, rising four times the morning AQI count of 88, logged at 10 am. Lake Town's East Calcutta Girls' College station followed closely with an AQI of 311 at 1 am, up from 65 in the morning. Other stations that reported 'very poor' AQI included Lady Brabourne at Park Circus, where the figures jumped from 72 in the morning to 307 at 11 pm, and Avidipta at Ajay Nagar on EM Bypass, where the AQI spiralled up from 65 to 302 during the same time frame. Apart from fireworks, meteorological factors, such as low wind speeds and temperature inversions at night, may have helped trap pollutants close to the ground, worsening air quality.In contrast, College Street stood out with 'good' AQI throughout the day and night. This localised variation highlighted the disparity in air pollution levels even within a city, influenced by factors, such as traffic density, local emission sources and meteorological conditions, said a PCB scientist.Experts blamed the poor AQI on the "display" fireworks, which emit vibrant, colourful lights but at a steep environmental cost. These fireworks were loaded with heavy metals and toxic chemicals that contaminated the atmosphere, said a senior WBPCB official, adding the damage caused was often long-lasting, contributing to persistent pollution levels well beyond the festival. Beyond the immediate health risks of respiratory problems, heart issues and aggravation of chronic diseases, the pollutants released can disrupt delicate ecosystems and even threaten the survival of certain species in the atmosphere. This environmental toll underscored the urgent need to rethink traditional celebrations and adopt more sustainable alternatives, said zoologist Ena Roy Banerjee.Experts pointed out the 'poor' and 'very poor' air meant a concentration of pollutants, such as PM2.5 and PM10, which could aggravate respiratory and cardiovascular problems. Those could cause health issues even in healthy people, while those with pre-existing conditions faced severe risks.
