New Delhi, June 8 (UNI) Active Covid-19 cases in India have crossed the 6,000 mark following a surge of nearly 400 new infections reported in the past 24 hours. The country also recorded six Covid-related deaths during this period, with three fatalities reported from Kerala, as per the data available from the Union Health Ministry. As of now, India has 6,133 active cases and a cumulative death toll of 65. Kerala continues to report the highest number of active infections, nearing the 2,000 mark, making it the state with the largest current caseload. In the last 24 hours, 378 new cases were reported from across the States. After Kerala, Gujarat has emerged as the second-worst affected state, experiencing a significant rise with 105 new infections recorded between June 7 and June 8, pushing its active cases to over 820. In Kerala, an increase of 144 cases in a single day underscores the high transmissibility of the JN.1 COVID-19 variant. Protein mutations such as NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, although associated with mild symptoms, are noted for their rapid spread. West Bengal added 71 new cases, bringing its active case tally to 693. Delhi saw a comparatively modest increase of 21 new infections, with the capital's active caseload reaching 686. Conversely, Karnataka reported a notable decline, with over 75 fewer active cases, bringing its total down to 366. Meanwhile, Maharashtra is touching the 600-case mark. Notably, among the six recent fatalities, Kerala reported three deaths: a 51-year-old kidney transplant recipient, a 64-year-old man with diabetes, cancer, and kidney disease, and a 92-year-old individual with multiple comorbidities, including heart disease and cancer. All suffered respiratory complications and tested positive for Covid-19. Karnataka reported two deaths -- a 46-year-old and a 78-year-old male -- both of whom had pre-existing heart and lung conditions and were found to be Covid-positive during routine examinations.
