Patna: Nephrologist Dr Hemant Kumar, who served in the field of health, was nominated for the Padma Shri on the eve of Republic Day. In an interview with TOI's Sheezan Nezami, Dr Kumar talks about his journey, inspiration and his future plans. Excerpts: Congratulations on making it to the list of Padma Shri. How are you feeling and what about the celebration? My family, everyone associated with me, and I are very happy. I was awarded for my social work and my model of working, which focused on kidney diseases and primarily on its prevention. Can you share your journey in brief? What inspired you to choose the health sector? After my MBBS from Jamshedpur, I did my MD from PMCH and then DM in 1998 from BHU. I served as head at IGIMS and PMCH and even served as a director of Gardiner Hospital. At all these places, I focused on making kidney treatment easy. Initially, I saw how difficult the disease and its treatment were and understood the importance of prevention. Hence, I adopted Kurkuri village in Patna, where a team of doctors from IGIMS used to go for awareness, especially on diabetes and blood pressure, as these were the two main reasons for kidney diseases. Later, we expanded our awareness campaign to areas across the state, focusing on slums, schools and women. Since school days I had made my mind to serve the society through the field of medicine. While going to hospitals with parents, I had seen the plight of people and hence decided to opt for this field. How have things changed in kidney treatment from the early 90s to now? There was a paradigm shift. I remember there were limited machines for dialysis and limited shifts and we could not serve all the patients. In fact, during my tenure at PMCH, I made a 24-hour dialysis facility. But at present, all the districts have four to five dialysis machines and treatment is given for free under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme. What is your suggestion to the people, especially the govt? Make common body check-ups a must in schools, at least a urine test, so that if any child has any kidney-related issue, timely treatment can prevent chronic kidney disease. Such check-ups should be in the curriculum. What is your next plan? I want to go ahead with the awareness programme on the prevention of kidney diseases.
