Chandigarh: This year, Diwali brought a mixed bag for the city's air quality, with pollution levels spiking on the festival night but still showing an overall improvement as compared to previous years.According to data released by Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC), air quality across the city remained in the "satisfactory" to "moderate" range (AQI below 120) on regular days. However, Diwali night saw a sharp rise in pollution levels due to the bursting of firecrackers, pushing Air Quality Index (AQI) into the "very poor" category at several locations.The CPCC monitors AQI at six sites across the city. On Diwali, air quality remained moderate until 8pm, after which it deteriorated significantly. Sector 53 recorded an AQI of 304, IMTECH-Sector 39 reached 318, and PEC-12 touched 312 -- all falling under the "very poor" category. Sector 22 (234) and Sector 25 (296) recorded "Poor" air quality, while Sector 17 remained in the "moderate" range even during peak hours.Despite the spike, overall air quality was better than last Diwali (2024) at four of the six monitoring sites -- sectors 17, 22, 25, and 53. CPCC attributed this improvement to increased environmental awareness, particularly among school children and younger residents. A CPCC spokesperson noted that the city has seen consistent improvement in Diwali air quality since 2022.Chandigarh administration had issued strict guidelines for firecracker use, allowing only green crackers to be burst between 8pm and 10pm. While most residents adhered to the time window, a few violations were reported. The evening before Diwali remained relatively quiet, with air quality levels similar to a normal day.By 1am on Oct 21, AQI levels had returned to the "satisfactory" range, aided by favourable weather conditions. CPCC officials conducted air and noise monitoring on both Oct 13 (a regular day) and Oct 20 (Diwali) to assess the environmental impact.
